red bull's only early marketing was in wipeout XL for ps1. for a while there was little to no marketing, but since there was little to no competition they flourished. products like bawls flourished but only on a much lower scale(mostly because they promoted themselves through lan parties). then the huge energy drink market hit and you see the marketing on tv today. realistically you can get 2-3x as much "energy drink" for the same price, the real issue is the effectiveness.

This is certainly an interesting development.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go and post some suicide hotline phone numbers on the official Vanguard boards.

I wonder if the DC comics based MMO or 'Gods & Heroes' will also fall under the all access pass program. It might make me consider getting the all access pass. Even just EQ2 and Vanguard makes it temping to me.

I hope the vision leads to something I enjoy playing. Even if it doesn't it's nice to see people enthusiastic about their work and willing to what seems to be possible risks/funding losses in order to reach that vision.

Maybe Vanguard will be a better game because of this, plus MGS will have more money to invest in other projects at the same time. It could be win/win.

I think we all pretty much know that we are being given (at the very least) incomplete information on this deal, if not a complete spin.

It is apparent that some sort of stand-off between MS and Sigil took place. MS for sure wasnt happy with only 100 people playing the beta of a game they've been pumping money and wanted to see some radical changes. Brad must have refused and MS was probably gonna pull the plug (wouldnt be the first one for them) and at that point Sigil somehow BOUGHT BACK the rights over the game's development...

Not only did Sigil apparently bought back the IP rights over their game, but Microsoft was somehow reimbursed for their previous investments. Am I the only one who thinks Sigil could not have come up with this kind of money on their own?

It appears that SOE was brought in not just for their "marketing experience" but also for some serious financial backing so that VG can live on. If this is the case, then sure as hell SOE will have alot of say in the game's future development.

Just my 2 eurocents,
Istros

edit:

Jon Grande, VP of Sigil has posted this on the official forums:
"Sigil is responsible for funding all development ... that's how. Now I can't promise that it'll never change (ie - if SOE decides to buy Sigil at some point down the road, etc) ... but the structure of the deal, as it is today ... ensures Sigil's autonomy. Both corporately - and financially."

What I underlined is probably what's not being said now, but what's gonna happen anyhow :/

Hopefully this move will filter out the ignorant idiots that plagued the Vanguard forums (so basically VG has no fanbase now). /zing!

You have a game that is going to target thousands if not millions of players. It IS NOT hard to find investors or people who will fund your project privately. Hell, Requiem will tell you that. You can get money from almost anyone, hell, I got Xyience to hook naiasports.net with some big cash just to sponsor them and it took and easy email. In conclusion, it is NOT hard to get money if you have a solid product. Those that bitch and say Vanguard isn't a solid product knows absoluetly nothing about business.

Now by SOE possibly buying Vanguard in the future? I can totally see it. I'm all about vanguard and can't wait untill it's release but I can't be so naive to think the game will last forever under the vision. It would be a great buyout for SOE and Sigil will get huge money from them. I'll even state it again, buyouts happen all the fricken time, sometime for the better, sometime for the worse. I'm still pissed about Autodesk buying out Alias, I swear, if they did it just to kill off their competition so 3d studio can rise above I'll be pissed. I hate 3dstudio... But anyway, if it happens it happens, welcome to the real world of business.

The cool thing about MMO development is that "the people" have more impact on the company than any other business. I think that is pretty cool, even though that is purely my opinion and I have no facts to back it up.

I was just trying to illustrate the point that not all companys do their own marketing and by partnering with a powerhouse is for the win. But ya, I see your points.

Well, to be honest, I do have high hopes for Age of Conan if they can get the pvp right and dont pull off another Anarchy Online with the launch... the game world looks very atmospheric to say the least [so little brown!]
