I also picked up the client and ran through the tutorial, and while it's definitely looking like a game I might enjoy (it reminds me of early UO's player/social-centricity), I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around everything I was shown. Does the learning curve get easier, or will I need to scour the web for guides and stats for every single aspect of the game? The official guides do a poor job of explaining why I would want specific skills, weapons, etc.

The learning curve, when you first start, is actually more akin to a cliff face. However, once you get past that it's...well, not easy but at least straightforward.

Hahahaha... Don't blame me(though I would recommend against wandering around in a hauler or freighter :P). The sum total of my engagement in the war thus far was tackling a Caracal in Orvolle, blowing up a newbieship, and getting popped quite handily by an AXE gang outside S1(Curse vs. Rifter cap = tackled without a warp scram).

You can warp with no cap, not far, but far enough to be more than safe.

You're right, as usual, but looking at the killmail, it actually looks like I got scrammed by an Eagle as well. In retrospect my choice of cap relays in the lows so I could permanently run the jammers was probably a poor one.

For some real content, the new client on SiSi(Dragon) has the statistics for the new tier 2 Battlecruisers built in. Thread discussing them can be found http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingamebo...hreadID=371897 but the pertinent stats are as follows:

Code:
Name, CPU, Powergrid, Highs, Mediums, Lows, Launchers, Turrets, Drone space, Speed

Minmatar Hurricane, 400, 1400, 8, 4, 6, 3, 7, 30, 165
Amarr Betrayal, 360, 1550, 8, 3, 7, 0, 8, 50, 150
Gallente Myrmiddon, 400, 1100, 8, 5, 5, 1, 6, 100, 145
Caldari Drake, 525, 800, 8, 6, 4, 7, 3, 25, 140

The problem is that they don't want to pigeon hole anyone and in the process it becomes a mess for the end user. So theres no right answer..

General Breakdown though

Production -> production efficiency, haulers
Mining -> mining barge skills, strip miners, refining, haulers
PvP -> gunnery skills, gunnery boats
Mission Running -> Missle skills, missle boat
Electronic Warfare for PvP -> ECM skills, possibly caldari ships

That should hopefully give you a good start, it's rather vague but I figure you can read into it.

Go for a pirate career .. learn basic electronic warfare, read the scanning tutorials on the eve boards, learn how to make bookmarks and kill miners in lowsec for profit.
You can do that with a cheap frig and a friend or alone or in a cheap cruiser and it is a blast =)
You could be lucky like one of my RL friends who just started and score a 15 million module that was fitted on a helpless hauler who just tried to get his ore to a station from an asteroid belt.

Awesome. I tried flying a brutix with rats and also in PVP and thought it was a pile of shit for the most part, in large part because of it's lack of agility. I really enjoyed the Ferox with a huge passive tank though. Different style of play between the two.

It'll be interesting to see how the new ones turn out and I'd expect the Caldari to be very popular.

I'm going to make the craziest anti interceptor ship with the Battlecruiser for shits and giggles.

Nothing but tech 2 assault missile launchers with tech 2 missiles, couple sensor dampeners, target painters, light drones.

Come near and tackle my friends, will you.....

You don't need to tackle BC, they pop before they get a chance to warp out, soooo slow. They really need an agility boost in order to be something else than free killmails.

Actually, the Betrayal (name has to change) wouldn't be a bad super-destroyer either - 8 medium pulses, webber/AB/cap recharged in medium, heat sinks, big armour plate, hardeners and 2xT2 small armour repairers in low, plus a bellyful of light drones.

Hell, fit it with energy disruptors/nos and let the drones do the killing.

Agility is going to fall just behind normal cruisers, but far and above better then the current slower-to-align-then-battleship clunkers we have.
