EQ Raids

Interesting read on Mob hunter with the lead EQ raid designer. Most of it's common sense, but that's easy to say after you read something and look back.

http://www.mobhunter.com/001443.html

It is not a secret that EQ is by far and away the current ass kicker in all MMO's in terms of raid content.

That Trial of Corruption event sounds badass.

On my first guild summit nearly two years ago I met a designer and bent his ear as I bent so many with my gushing praise for LDON and my desires for an LDON 2. The kind man nodded and smiled enthusiastically, mentioning their own feelings with the release of LDON and their own desires for a system like that in the future (what became today's mission system). Little did I know I was speaking to the legendary Prathun, Johnathan Caraker, the main raid designer for Everquest since the days of Gates of Discord.
Sorry, but this whole paragraph is rage inspiring. Seriously, Loral is probably retarded.

A serious wtf. GoD was the biggest pos expansion for a game made next to AC2 expansion (whatever the fuck it is called). By legendary, I am assuming he meant legendary fuckup.

True, but the raid content has come a long way since then. It has seen many highs and lows, GoD raids being some of them. Raid content has been pretty well done the last 3 expansions or so.

I find it odd that "the most experienced raid designer in the industry" (quoting by memory) started designing raids during the GoD era. Or did he start before? Or are they counting numbers of raid designed and not number of years in that position? Or was that just a wild assumption?

Come a long way? As in all the players quit and the mudflation escalated to an all time high? Then yeah, it sure did.

As it's not a secret that you're either a dumbass or a fanboy. I'm sure EQ raids are pretty good atm, but superlatives like this are more suited for mmorpg.com jizzing contests.

I don't see what itemization has to do with event design. Raids have continued to evolve in a mostly positive direction in EQ. I feel that their greatest issue is class structure, but that isn't going to change. Prathun sounds decent despite being interviewed by Loral, who I cannot stand. Mobhunter has been dead to me since Moorgard departed. I can't remember a single position of Loral's that I agree with.

I enjoyed the raiding up to Uqua in God,I don't know what it was like after since I quit at that time, but the trials and the KT raid instances I thought were pretty fun.

The class requirements and such might have been suspect,as well as how you had to access the zones and such, but the events themselves I found appealing.I see to recall at least a couple that actually required more than just 5-10 people in your raid doing somehting other than healing or adding DPS which was a nice hcange, and a good way of fidning out who of the 80 odd people in an average guild at that time actually knew anything..

Once they actually fixed the shit in GoD, the raids were done very well. Everything since then has been very imaginative and challenging as well. No matter how good something is, though, if it's broken, it's not fun.

Prathun was in my guild way back before it broke up.
I remember when they revamped pohate and I'd tell him not to spoil it and tell us the strat for the new maestro.

Uhm... A lot fewer people quit EQ than some would like to belive, obviously its doing pretty darn good if they are still cranking out the content for it. They would kill it off and cut costs if it was losing money. As for the mudflation pray tell what happened to items between Velious-> Time(3 expansions). Its called progression.

Well... some major server consolidation happened and all the extra-american servers went the way of the dodo. I am sure it's still viable though.

And as far as PvE raid content, I am sure EQ is up there in quality, but it certainly dwarves anything else in quantity (though I guess big chunks of it are skipped because the PitAvR is no longer good enough).
