+26 Internets | I wouldn't consider MMO's an industry unto themselves. I would consider them a genre in the gaming industry. And World of Warcraft came into that genre with an extremely recognizable name attached to it. Maybe that's just me, though. |

+38 Internets | I judge WoW's like this: my group of friends are NOT gamers. They never have been. I never play MP games because I can't stand the standard cockmunchers out there, and none of my RL friends play (okay, a couple play Starcraft from time to time, and back in the day I DM'd them into submission in Quake over modem, they pretty much gave up after that). Video games in general don't really come up in my standard conversations with them, with the exception of Tiger Woods (couple guys play that a fair amount). I'm now starting to hear, from time to time, friends mentioning hearing about WoW and wondering what it is, or them talking about soandso's husband/boyfriend who got laid off from work (unrelated to the game) and who now just sits on his ass and plays WoW. It's going mainstream. When I played Everquest I got made fun of on a regular basis, now I've got half a dozen aquaintences that play it or know someone who play it. I think that's only a good thing, because those people are undoubtedly going to try other online games after that. Like Aradune's been saying for years, each successive new game hasn't leached players from the ones before it, it's expanded the market for that kind of game. And WoW is completely blowing it open. |

+26 Internets | I agree Eomer. It's really what makes the threads where people who argue over the games' subscriptions to be retarded. It reminds of when people argue over which console is better. When it comes down to it, the more competition there is in any industry(gaming, automobiles, electronics, etc), the consumers are the winners. I think WoW bringing MMO gaming to the masses is a good thing, in the big picture of MMO's. |

In EQ, two nerds I worked with at Pizza Hut played it and got me into it. Noone else knew what it was and those who did refused to play it and used to call the three of us the "Everdorks". Now like 4 people at my restaurant job play WoW (only one of which I would classify as a "nerd"), at least a dozen EMTs at the station play it (if not more). I know 4 women who play, two of which are smoking hotties who you would never imagine would play any video game yet alone an MMO. And the topper is my brother playing it. Mr. Jock, Mr. Star Soccer player, Mr. perfect anti-geek, now plays an MMO....more than I do. And honestly, I think it's only a good thing.
