Vanguard - Brad posts about X-Box360 and Unreal 3 engine

Just so you people don't think I have totally lost all interest in vanguard (which I haven't):

Just to further torment you all and add to the rumors floating about :

Taranis is correct: no work has been done on an Xbox 360 client.

That said, a couple of things:

1. We will be switching to the Unreal 3 engine by the first or second expansion.

2. The Unreal 3 engine works nicely on both PC and Xbox 360.

3. Our second sekret project, which if you dig around at all you'll likely be able to figure out what it is though my lips are sealed, is on the Xbox 360.

4. We like to share technology, code, tools, etc.

Connect the dots

A graphics overhaul and the game isn't even out yet? Weak sauce indeed.

Sounds less to me like a graphics overhaul and more like a structural change that will let them get an XBox-360 version out. If they have this change in mind already I'm asuming their existing content will be able to load into the Unreal 3 engine with minimal changes to both.

If I remember correctly DAOC had an interchangable engine, and in fact it was swapped a couple of times in the lifeline of DAOC.

Hehe, unlike you naysayers, I think its a great feature to have an upgradable graphics engine. they sure learned their lessons from EQ.

Braen, it's your job to do the dot connecting for us and figure out what the hell he's being all cryptic about.

As far as a beta goes, there IS a beta, they're just keeping it small for the time being. I can see why, you don't need 50K simultaneous users to figure out if the combat system sucks ass.

I'm sure it has a lot of advantages. I'm just worried that the team will have to put a lot of time into this and the amount of content on release will suffer. That or the release will be held back.

Why didnt they plan ahead to use the Unreal3 from the get go?

Unreal3 is aimed at computers in 2006 and next gen sysems like PS3 and XBox360 and likely will be way too much for most modern hardware. By waiting until the first expansion or so they are letting the hardware catch up.

Heres a bit from unreal:

Quote:
If you're developing a title for current-generation PC, Xbox, or PlayStation2, then Unreal Engine 2 is the way to go. It has shipped in many recent leading-edge games including UT2004 and Splinter Cell. Unreal Engine 2 is very stable, and several code bases are available including the code powering UT2004, the code powering the upcoming Unreal Championship 2 game, and a PlayStation2-optimized version.

If you're starting on a forward-looking title aimed at upcoming next-generation consoles and 2006 PC's, then Unreal Engine 3 is for you. Its core subsystems have been architected from the ground up for upcoming consoles and DirectX9 PC's, to take maximum advantage of shader programs, per-pixel lighting and shadowing, multithreading, and next-generation content creation tools.

I'd put money on it not being an overhaul. They're not going to redo all the models(an overhaul). My guess is they're making the models in such a way that they look good under Unreal 2 but will look better under Unreal 3.
