GuildWars hits 1m

http://www.guildwars.com/press/pr11-22-09-05.html

I think this re-enforces the theory that the genre as a whole is still growing strongly.

Given that they don't have a monthly fee I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing for the GW team. I can't help but wonder if some of the team is saying "Fuck we coulda charged at least $5 a month"!

I've played GW on my GF's account and it's a pretty fun game, amazing graphics. Maybe I should pick it up sometime for myself, I need something to play all winter

The biggest surprise for me was the free expansion pack. Not really a full expansion, but free new content and game fixes that SOE would have charged for back in the day. I thought that they were going to be releasing several add-ons that would be around 30 bucks each every couple months, thus equating about what people pay in monthly fees, only for new content. The game has a lot of possibilty and especialy with no monthly fee, I can see people reinstalling and picking this back up and possibly buying addons even if they didnt get into the game at first purchase.

I tried Guild Wars for a while, and I just simply could never get into it at all.

Yes, the graphics are nice, and there are some good ideas about the game. But I found the whole "tradeskill" aspect of things very simplistic (too much) and really just an excuse to create enhancements to existing lame items to make them more worthwhile.

Also, the fact that zoning in and out of instances would randomly send you to other 'servers' simply removed any sense of community from the game.

As for what little sense of community I saw, it was mostly extremely rude and noisy kids in all chat channels thanks to no monthly fee allowing them to play all the time..

Guildwars is great fun, and I'd be playing it nonstop if my computer didn't disagree with it on a very fundamental level.

I'm amazed how far they're going to fix their shit before they start shoving $30 addons down our throats. They have no monthly fee, all their post-sale cash is supposed to come from these addons, but it's been out a damn long time now and they're still fixing the broken stuff and making the game better rather than worrying about draining cash out of people.

And it's not like the game was launched in horrible fashion. Pretty fucking smooth. I think there was one session of downtime that interupted my gameplay on the way to 20, and that was it.

Not sure how much fun this game would be unless you're a member of a guild who digs PvP and uses Teamspeak or Ventrilo, though. The strategy that goes into making builds and the pace of combat basically makes it mandatory to plan this shit out beforehand and be able to communicate changes on the fly, or you'll spend most of your time getting curbstomped by Koreans in the first round.

There's no reason any CRPG/MMO fan shouldn't own guildwars. It's more than worth it just for the campaign, and on top of that it's great fun for quick PvP action with lots of diversity, strategy, and tactics. You don't have to get bogged down in min/max, drama, or anything else. You can pop in for 15 minutes and have instant Deathmatch, GvG, etc..

It's not however a game to replace your current MMO. Progression isn't in Guild Wars vocabulary.

IOW it's Diablo3, not WoW2.
Not that there's anything wrong with being Diablo3, of course.

Nah, I think those people are right.

I mean, obviously long term, cash is what they are concerned with.

But presently they're more concerned with making their current player base happy by polishing their game, and they'll focus on releasing money-making expansions later on.

That way they won't just lose what players they do have now to shitty gameplay, and end up making less in the end.

Good to see GW doing well. Lot of the people there had a big part in WoWs success, if only building the Blizzard name to what it is today.

GuildWars is the ONLY game I've ever played where being a healer was fun.

Great game. Anyone who disagrees hasn't given it a chance (or has skewed expectations.)

Some of the most boring PvE I've ever met, follow the path through the open map killing clumps of similar looking mobs. And as for the many healing skills the vast majority of them seem pretty weak, I'm still using orison at breeze as I have been since I got them (I'm not L20 though).

Anyway, for guildwars "1 million" is a meaningless number, online population peaks is far more important. I'd also love to know how their funding model is working, something that will become more obvious when they do launch an expansion and we get to see how many people buy it.
