Old players returning EQ

I reactivated my account about a month ago on Fennin Ro. What I have noticed within that month is alot, I mean, ALOT of old players are returning. I guess its noticable that WoW has no endgame. I don't keep up with it anyway.

I stoped playing about a year ago because the servers were DEAD. Ever since they combined servers and released the new expansion, lots of people are starting old guilds up... close to just like old times..

I guess we are still waiting for a "groundbreaking" MMO eh..

I dont doubt that. While Wow is fun in its own right, it just does not have that EPIC feeling that EQ used to. Especially for the hardcore peeps. I can see them having 100 times the shit to do in EQ than in WoW.

people who want an eq1 style grind / mega-raid game are unlikely to get one. other game companies have seen WoWs success with the "casual" slant and are changing gears to grab their share of this unexpected market. eq2's banners tout "now with faster advancement!" and vanguard is, well, hype ATM, but we'll see how that goes.

no game company actually out to make money is going to create a game for 100k people when they can, for the same dev costs, create a game for 500k people. it would be dumb business, and no one, NO ONE is such a moral crusader as to do it because "its better gaming" unless they are already rich (carmack).

I logged on this past weekend for shits and see what the new expansion is about. It was hilarious, every single person I grouped with were all just returning from being bored from WoW or EQ2 and none of us knew what the hell we were doing.

Needless to say, corpses everywhere. And there is a fuckton of content to catch up on. 4 expansions worth, christ.

Edit: And the bazaar still has over 300 people in it. I am so fucking lost in there, they redid the zone entirely. Its a huge maze now.

I've kept my account active ever since I quit Afterlife and uninstalled the game; for whatever reason.

I'll see what's going on with Saryrn/Mith Marr now for shits and giggles too.

This is a pretty common cycle for MMORPG's. Same thing happened with UO when EQ came out. Some people left UO and never looked back. Others didn't enjoy EQ and returned to UO.

If its worth your $$ and your time, and you enjoy it, by all means break a leg. Personally I think you can't spit-shine a turd, and thus I don't see myself ever wasting time on EQ ever again. For those who go back and have fun, more power to you!

350 for an EQ account? Jesus with the mass exodus last year I couldn't even give my account away. IGE was offering like 20 bucks.

There isn't a link between WoW's "casual slant" and box sales, people don't have knowledge of the gameplay until they've bought it. Blizzards name is the cause of box sales. We need retention rates statistics before we can determine if players like a "casual slant".
