Another WoW article in the NY Times

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/06/ar...gn/06worl.html

Sadly this one doesn't have any juicy reporting from Blizzard in it (maybe the Blizzard staffers are still reeling from their horsehead iconography seminar), but it does have some interesting quotes...

Quote:

"I don't think there are four million people in the world who really want to play online games every month," said Michael Pachter, a research analyst for Wedbush Morgan, a securities firm. "World of Warcraft is such an exception. I frankly think it's the buzz factor, and eventually it will come back to the mean, maybe a million subscribers."

"It may continue to grow in China," Mr. Pachter added, "but not in Europe or the U.S. We don't need the imaginary outlet to feel a sense of accomplishment here. It just doesn't work in the U.S. It just doesn't make any sense."
Apparently the honorable Mr. Pachter doesn't know people like us. Then again the NY investment banker types I know make the charicatures in movies like American Psycho seem tame in comparison. (Spend most of the day ordering new office furniture, watching HDTV baseball games in their finely appointed offices and yet still managing to get a few deals made between lunch cocktails and afternoon cocktails to justify that 6 figure floor on their annual bonus)

If there's one thing American's *don't* lack it's the ability to sit on our collective lazy asses and play online video games. It's not surprising that one pseudo-intellect can make random assumptions about a field where he has no experience and yet be taken seriously at the same time for his comments.

It's also not surprising that if you rearrange the letters in "Mr. Pachter's" name you get: "S.M.R. Patcher"...

Perhaps he works for Sigil, trying to throw us for a loop.

i read that last statement by mr pachter and just laughed...

that person doesn't KNOW mmo players, and doesn't know gamers AT ALL.

wonder if he knows wow has a million users in the US alone and i bet wow europe is still around the 750k-1 million mark

will the numbers go Down? ayup most definately, but no where near the "one million" mark... imo they might lose 50% of their user base over the next 3 years, but that is about it unless some other "800lb gorilla" comes around. and frankly them being at 2 million users ...still means they are an 800lb gorilla....

CD-ROMs will never replace floppies, they are far too expensive.

Btw, here's Mr. Watson selling one of those 5 computers. Danke Mr. Fuhrer...only 4 more to go!

Sure Mr. Gates, you can retain the rights to the software, the money is all in the hardware anyway.

I'd say it's one of the top greatest, for sure.
