First MMORPG

I thought Meridian 59 had claim to fame on the first MMORPG not a mud.

Anyways interesting article on /. about a ressurection project of supposedly the first mmorpg.

http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl...tid=209&tid=10

The website of the game is getting hammered so give it time.

Lol, now all I can think about now is: What was the first MMORPG?!

I remember "The Realm" and I played "Dark Sun Online: Crimson Sands" in 1996, but I'm not entirely sure what was really the first. Fun link, thanks

The Realm was definitely earlier than Meridian 59. The real problem is defining MMORPG that aren't MUDs. Do people consider the old Neverwinter Nights a MUD?

Meridian 59 was teh insane way back then. I had just gotten my first internet access the year before and I have fond memories of the beta during the summer of 96, and the sadness that came with its ending as I did'nt have access to a credit card back then so I could'nt keep playing.

Thank god, I'd have flunked my year for sure.

Anyway, Meridian 59 had a pretty innovative feature where you had to travel to certain mana nodes and "tap" them to boost your max mana points; those nodes were often situated in not so friendly environments too. That was pretty cool as a reward for exploring the (minuscule by current standards) world. VG's supposed to have that for certain classes (at least the Psionicist), I hope it turns out well.

Kinda a moot point though since its like the statues of ape evolving into early man, at which point did it stop being a monkey?

Think one or two of the really early ones WERE MUDS with a custom interface that displayed wizardy esque graphics instead of room descriptions.

yeah The Realm is pretty freaking old, and i would consider it an MMO. I played TR some at my friends house and then UO came out so we all picked it up instead... =)

Bad analogy, really bad

Monkeys arent Apes, no relation other than both being primates. It's like comparing a Whale to a Human because both are Mammals. And pinpointing the moment Apes became sentient is far from a moot point. Not that I wouldn't like to throw all religion and evolutionary theory out the window, but honestly....moot?

For statement #2

MUDs had custom interfaces depending on what client you used. MMOs require you to use their Client, not your own. Many MUDs were BYOC. Again, that's a big difference. I hesitate to call DSO:CS a MMORPG because it let you import custom characters, not something an MMO would let you do for example, but it used a proprietary client, and supported massively multiplayer, not just dungeon instances and a 'community area'.

Nowadays even your web-browser can be a MUD client. But there's no MMO that lets you use your own client. Personally I think that's the fundamental difference.

Evidently you need to go back to school to learn how to comprehend. Its a moot point because quite frankly it doesn't matter. You show me how knowing the exact point that happened is going to change my life and everybody else life on earth.

Actually there WERE some muds that you could NOT play without their graphical client because the text coming over telnet wasn't designed for normal readability and had a lot of imbedded data and these are the muds I have in mind. Don't think they are around anymore, muds tend to turn over every couple of years.

Shadows of Yserbius was the first MMORPG I believe, unless there was a MUD of it's type before it.

It used to be on Sierra's Imagination Network like 12-14 years ago. It was before "The Realm".

NWN on AOL was the first graphical "MMO". Everything before that were text based muds.

This was the first 'MMO' I ever played. I think I used to pay something retarded like 200 bucks a month for 100 hours on Imagination Network. Is my memory off or was it that rediculously priced?

Alot of the old online games were insane prices. Back then, most internet access was calculated by the hour, plus you usually had to pay an hourly fee for alot of games to boot. Remember when AOL was like 4 bucks an hour? Heh NWN got really expensive ;/

Viva la unlimited access.
