WoW naming policy relaxed

In Europe anyway. The WoW naming policy has been a pretty large bone of contention for a lot of people. It seems the community is split between those who like a strict policy because they are fed up of dealing with retarded names and those who want to be able to name their character xXasscrackXx. Recently the European WoW servers have had the policy relaxed:

Quote:
Hello all,

During the past few months we have received a lot of feedback from the community on our naming policies. In addition we are always discussing our policies internally, and we have decided to revise several points in the Naming Policy.

A general problem is that our policy has been too restrictive. Too often we have had to change player names that were not allowed by our policy, but which we did not really consider harmful to the game atmosphere or to other players. In addition the policy was not always easy to understand, so part of the changes is an attempt to make it simpler.

Our policies are constantly being reviewed, and I'd like to thank you for the feedback you have provided so far.

You can find the updated Naming and Role-Play Realm Policy here:
http://www.wow-europe.com/en/policy/namingp1.html

Please use this thread to give feedback on these changes.

Thank you,
Lead Gamemaster
In particular the major change is:

Quote:
Only applied on the Roleplaying Servers
Names which fall under the following categories are deemed to be mildly inappropriate but only on the Roleplay servers of World of Warcraft. Clarification on what constitutes each category can be found by clicking on the links below.
  • Partial or Complete Sentences (Does not apply to Guild Names)
  • Real World References
  • Contain "Leet" or "Dudespeak"
  • Immersion breaking titles
So you may now use leet speak and partial sentences as your name on all of the ordinary servers. I really hope this doesn't open the door to all sorts of crap that will further damage the community but I suspect heavily that it will. Given the number of names that broke the old convention I'm not surprised that they changed things when half their time must have been spent chasing after people for it. Still it smacks of a defeat for Blizzard and a victory for the tards. I haven't noticed anything about this for the US servers yet and it raises an interesting question: is this the first of many changes that marks a divergent strategy for WoW between the two territories?

maybe now they'll have time for legitimate customer service?

I don't care if some kid has a name even stupider than your mom wants me. I want me fucking help requests answered. Name chasing is a waste of everyone's time.

Also, would you invite goatserulexxx to your group? What if his name was atser? If you don't like those kinds of people and would rather not associate with them a shitty name is your first line of defense.

So I guess the name of my alt orc hunter 'Gnomophile' is still not allowed. Anyway, I've seen dozens of people with rule-breaking names, and I've never heard anyone on the server complain about a name-change (even tho these people with these names are probably stupid enough to spam it in general all day long would it happen). Not to mention all the people with offensive names in their own language, I don't think anyone who doesn't speak dutch would know that 'Retenaaier' actually means buttfucker :P I doubt they have that many GM's to speak a language other then english (or french/german on those servers), so the chances of these names being found are small.

The problem was never the naming policy, it was the retards they have doing enforcement. You don't have to be some roleplaying fag to consider those kinds of names a lot more than "mildly inappropriate".

Good. I miss being able to spot the retards in beta who had names like xxyztupackillahzz. Just saved you alot of headache. They should really remove the random name generator. It throws you off.

I still can't believe they let you use ASCI codes or whatever as names. Fear the mighty ÖÉúQä!

It may just be odd timing, but they seem to have relaxed the beauracracy a bit in regards to CS, at least relative to naming. I first got my name squatted on the first day of release, and after dozens of petitions, emails, and whatnot, it was restored a few weeks back. It took them seven months to finally restore my name to me (Fulorian, instead of Fuloriann).

Except I'd already quit. I don't believe for a minute it took 7 months to push through one little clear cut harassment/naming issue, and at the same time start rolling out name policy changes. Too convenient.

About 5 months ago I turned off player names in my UI. Has made me a lot happier. While I think some of the naming policy shit was stupid, spending all your CS time fucking with names is dumb too.

alright, heres an idea

when a GM sees a name thats against the policy, instead of changing it, just enter it into a server wide 'database' of offensive names.

the only thing this database would be used for, is to add in a feature for "Ignore Fucktards" and it would automatically ignore anyone on that list (updated dynamically of course).

Think of it like a voluntary netnanny for the idiots of wow.

Hmm, i think ill go post that on the suggestions forum

Names that break the rules can be funny occasionally. Like flying through IF and seeing Chucknorris beat Stevensegal in a duel.
