Funcom: The Age of Conan MMORPG

Here's the link to MMORPG.com

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/loadNews/2935

Seems like the Funcom Skunkworks has been secretly slaving away at, you guessed it, yet another Fantasy-based MMORPG. The screens look pretty descent but the question is will it ever see the light of day.

The important question:

Does everyone speak with an Austrian accent?

Well hopefully they learned from their previous MMO, Anarchy Online

Or not.

The crush your enemies! To see them driven before you and to hear the lamentations of their women!

(or something like that)

There's some more info at another click.

Quote:
***Explore Hyboria, the legendary world of Conan, presented in incredible graphics and sound.

***Emerge as a hero from a story-driven single-player experience and embark into even greater adventures in the multiplayer part of the game. The branching single-player story is created by the award-winning writers behind The Longest Journey, Dreamfall and Anarchy Online so expect a rare treat.

***Experience Funcom’s revolutionary “Real Combat” engine. A new multi-point melee system allows the players to swing their weapons where they direct it, in real-time, going head-on against the formulaic nature of online RPG combat. Create player-made battle formations, and command both NPC’s and other players in epic multiplayer battles.

***Form guilds in the multiplayer game and lay siege to hostile castles. Let the catapults sing their merry song of death as the enemy is brutally crushed to a pulp.
Let the catapults sing their merry song of death?

WTB Writers, tout de suite.

Weird, it doesn't sound like a traditional MMOG though. Seems like you play through the single player game before you hit the multiplayer part. Sounds interesting, I guess.

Im looking forward to hearing more about this.

Even though funcom basically fucked themselves with releasing AO in the state that it was in, there is no denying that probably to this date it was the most innovative mmorpg to date.

Plus their artists rock. At least the art in AO was cool.

What do you mean, doesn't sound like a traditional MMOG?

That was pretty much exactly my experience in WoW.

Granted, AO even at release felt like a "Living World". It even had McDonalds, ala "Bronto Burgers". They can make a great world, but don't forget so did Dragon Empires, and Ultima X and both of those never hit Beta. Their main problem is lack of fundamentals, and from this release they're going right back to the same problems as AO.

If you've played AO recently, and realize it's the same designers, it's also going to be the same "Single Player" game that AO was until you hit level 100+ in shadowlands. Rarely you'll see level 90s looking for group, but before that nada. Sounds like the same thing, only this time they're going to save bandwidth and let you play it offline. Offline also means very hackable unless everyones coming into the MMO part with a cookie cutter character in which case, were back to square 1, with "What's the point?"

There's a very limited amount of information at this time, but to be honest if they could pull out a good PvP game (which no one has yet done) the rest of the game can be garbage for all I care. Like a lot of people I want a great PvP/Siege game, but I'm not holding my breath. Blizzard was the king of PvP online games, and their MMO version (Battlegrounds) is still AWOL.

In regards to the "Command NPCs":

DAoC and Shadowbane both attempted to have large scale Sieges but eventually couldn't retain enough customers to make Siege battles worth while any more. I guess this is going to be Funcoms answer (replace PCs with NPCs). It's a massive undertaking and I wish them luck, but for now I'll side with reality and assume this won't ever pan out. But we always could use more trailblazers. But after the large amount of new games people wasted money on (CoH anyone?) I don't think too many players will be throwing their money at whatever MMORPG is coming out next.

lol EVERY MMO game starts like this...

EQnoob "LFG lvl 5!"
Random EQ asshole "You don't need to group at lvl 5! Solo till 10!"
EQnoob "But I thought this was a game that requires groups?"
Random EQ asshole "It is after you prove your not a noob, NOOB!"

Random WOW player "Want to group in WestFall to get exp."
Random Asshole that moved from EQ to WOW "You don't need to group at those lvls dumass!"
Random WOW Player "What? I just wanted more exp!"
RAtmfEQ "Bah you make more soloing in this game unless doing those shitty instances. You can go form 1 to 60 and never group! Damn noob!"

And on and on it goes.

What was obvious about what I said? If you are gonna try and insult someone atleast use more than 2 brain cells to do it, ok? Thanks.
Look a bit closer at what excatly? Just cause you can play offline alone doesn't make it any diffrent than online alone except you don't have to listen to random assholes, such as yourself, spouting nonsense in chats.

I played AO 3 times, once at release, maybe six months later and then when SL came out. And to be honest I never had problems finding a group, either in Sl or the old world. But whatever, I thought that the game was pretty cool and it introduced alot of cool ideas to mmorpgs. Plus it had a feeling about it, hard to explain but sort of like EQ had. i thought AO was good untill about 150ish, tons of shit to do, many places to go, missions...

But at about 150+ your options became slim, either missins after missions pre SL or missions and hecklers after SL released. I never really understood why they made a huge expansion like SL and realy the only mobs worth hunting for exp were hecklers. WTF?
