maybe.. but then let the WoW people explain 1.5+ million subscribers. Even as a non-fan of WoW I have to admit that is impressive. Being as that WoW is the lastest in a long line of high fantasy games...

I bet Blizzard isn't going to the bank saying "We better get a sci fi game going cause WoW is failing miserably. It's Fucking played out. Someone get Tigole on StarCraft MMO STAT!"

Engineering/WoW = Tinkering/EQ1 even the same race is good at it.

Only true difference in their setting is guns and mech mounts. Both ahve machines, both have a race that is good at that skill. Both make objects that are tecno not fantasy.

except tinkers in EQ couldn't really make anything nearly as cool as in WoW

as i remember the best tinkered items in EQ were (in order) #1. Anizok's minimizing device and #2. Invis device

nothing there that really compares with death ray, mechanical dragonling, net gun, bombs, etc

engineering just needs some way to make profit at the max skill in WoW to be a really cool tradeskill

Still the same thing.. jsut one was better than the other. my post was about how WOW was not just high fantasy... but EQ1 did the same thing.. 6 years before.

the difference is EQ's non-fantasy elements they still took seriously.

its obvious that in WoW's the goblin/gnomes are back and forth running jokes. can you honestly take scooty and his transporter seriously?

edit: in fact the game as a whole is one running joke. EQ had a more serious side to it, WoW is more "fun" and light hearted.

hell my friends spent 2hrs doing the wake the peon quest because "im not that kinda orc!"

Actually, Warcraft stole it's steampunk tech (along with pretty much everything else in Warcraft 1) from Warhammer.
Any anyway, engineering/tinkering gnomes are from the Dragonlance series.

Concurrence. I mean, correcting people taking my take on Vanguard wrong. MMOs are coming out like popcorn these days. If you get all whiny and pissy about things you can type in something like (OMG YOU NERFED MY CLASS I HATE YOU I CANCEL AND PLAY EQ3 BRAD MCQAIUD11!), whereas where did you go to in EQ. Well, I went to DAoC. laff. But anyway, fantasy is starting to feel old.

I think Vanguard will be the best out of this new crop, and with experience there some problems might be averted...but ehhh. Man, I could go for some cyberpunk MMO. Or a steampunk MMO. If I play VG for as long as I played EQ, I would've spend the better half of a decade slaying the dragon man, that's still a significant portion of my lifespan at this point!

EQ was when the iron was hot. No competition, muds were fairly popular at the time, internet connections were becoming more and more readily available...Hell, you might be able to commend EQ for bringing high-speed connections around to so many places. I only pay for DSL for MMOs, after all *grin* no need to multiply my pornography downloads to THAT degree.

The commercial success of WoW has absolutely nothing to do with being high fantasy, and everything to do with a word starting with B and ending with lizzard that they print on the box.

I'm honestly not sure why they didn't decide to make a Starcraft MMOG instead of a Warcraft one; maybe they though that the races would be too difficult to translate into MMOG terms, or whatever.

I'm tired of high fantasy, and a lot of people are with me. It's just that no one seems to be able to make a scifi MMOG that doesn't suck.

Heh, speaking of light hearted....even if you arent a warlock, tag along with one who is about to finish the Infernal quest they are adding this patch. Best quest ending ever.

now the game does tend to take a darker/more serious turn as you advance... but lets be realistic, a lot of things in the game subliminaly cater to a more carefree/fun atmosphere. a high end quest where you are "milked", blowing up helicopters, bopping peons on the head. sure these arent prevailing elements but they add to the general atmosphere. in EQ we grew accustomed to either a stale or serious environment.

i dunno, it just hit me today while thinking about it. sure it makes the game more fun for casual players, but as a hardcore player do we take it as seriously had this elements not been there?

It's a game, and WoW reminds you of that. The darker serious stuff is always needed, but you need a healthy dose of humor and self awareness. If you can't enjoy a game because a dwarf wants you to rub his belly or you have to defeat El Pollo Grande - the black chicken of death, because you would rather do "serious and realistic" tasks like slaying 80 foot tall fire breathing lizards...well....

And I think it's really what the gamers want in the end, to be honest. Fun toys and silly outfits and wacky quests to spice up their game. Remember years ago (velious I think) where a player posted a doctored picture of the bunny-hat and claimed they had found some secret combine that allowed you to make it. EVERYONE in the community wanted the hat, be it casual players or FOH. Everyone wanted it to be real, because deep down we wanted some absurdity in the game. When it was revealed to be a hoax and the community petitioned the developers to add it, they scoffed and almost seemed insulted at the concept that they would sully their h4rdc0r3 game with such nonsense.
