For some reason I don't think WoW is going to have people running 5 year subscriptions. Granted, it'll last for 5 years and more as long as the main attraction of the BGs aren't utterly retarded in implementation. But the same account for 5 devoutly paid every month...mmm, doubt it. No MMO will have EverQuest's godly retention rate, not even Vanguard; the playing field just isn't the same anymore.

Blizzard is probably making out like bandits right now, though, moneywise. No argument.
didnt someone post that like 20% of box sales never actually subscribe to mmo's? something stupid like that.

WoW's biggest advantage is the number of people new to mmo's who are playing it. its catering to the casual gamer. there are casual gamers out there who still havent hit 60, shocking as it is. ask the bog. while it may seem hard to us jaded mmo'rs that no one will play this game for 5 years, remember, people still play quake1/doom2/half-life.

Yeah, box sales don't net dick. Doubt Blizzard even saw much from those goofy $70 collector ones that got scalped with a markup by some less than reputable sources. But still, one kinda slack patch and it came out in November?

The accumulated subscription payment of 1.5 million subscribers gotta be going somewhere.

I replayed Doom 2 recently. Kinda made me want to find a Caslte Wolfenstein. Love killing nazis, yes I do.

Heh, no shit there Cyb, I agree 100%.

Fuck tedious exp grinds, that is so 1999.

Careful, them are fightin words around here. Suggesting Vanguard won't be anything but "the next best thing since sliced bread" is heresy. You're f*cking with the fantasy that heinous death penalties, long-levelling curves and forcing guilds to time and race to raid mobs is going to recapture the magic of old EQ.

recapture the magic of old EQ.
The magic of old EQ will never be recaptured for those who played EQ. I don't think it's a gameplay thing. It's a more visceral thing related to how new the genre was and how groundbreaking EQ was for the genre. There may be good MMO's out and coming in the future, but I don't think that feeling of old pre-Kunark EQ will ever be recaptured. Unless you are a complete MMO-virgin, the cherry has long been popped!

This man speaks the truth. Talk bad about Vanguard and Braen will personally come to your house and sexually abuse your pets.

Are you sure he's confirming its NOT 4/19? I mean, if you take his movie reference as a literal thing than it would in fact be confirmation of a 4/19 patch. *shrug* In typical Tyren fashion, I don't feel like any real answer was given. =)

I really do hope it's tomorrow. It will add alot of stuff to do in the game ;P Quests always a good motivator also. When they announced the warlock epic horse and I saw what was required, it was pretty daunting, but I banged out 370g+ in a week plus all the items.

My secret: I just looked for the IGE guild on the server, and hijacked their spots. Warlock > rogue for demon farming keke!

Naaaa I have never been the kind of fanboy that flames people to disagreeing with me. I just like to make sure facts on both sides are right. I mean passing bad information about Vanguard and not having it questioned or corrected would be like people saying Hero Classes, Battlegrounds, the Honor System and finished/tested/bug free end game content would be in WoW at launch. As Nelson said... HA HA!

If someone comes out with bad info on Vanguard, I will try my best to correct it. It's no secret I am a fan of this game and the people at Sigil, and I have never blasted someone's opinion. I might have asked for clarification here or there. But the words, cockgobbler or asshat or the myriad of other colorful metaphors that are so commmon here don't win any arguements.. And if they do.. I point you to the sign up for the Special Olympics. There is gold to be won there I tell you!

Reminds me of anyone who spoke ill of WoW about 6 months ago around here.

Vanguard will be a monumental disappointment to every MMO "vet" everywhere. It will suck because we're all sick and tired of high fantasy, whether we want to admit it or not.

It's played out.

A. Fucking. Men.

I don't agree that it necessarily dooms Vanguard, but for the love of god, make a scifi mmorpg that doesn't suck.

Anybody.

Please.

And here we go with correcting,

I don't think EQ1's death penalty was heinous and Vanguards will not be as hardcore. You leave a coprse yeah, all your equipment will be ther yeah, but you will spawn at an outpost near where you fell according to Brad. Also a "Silvery cord" will be availible to help you find the corpse should you need it.

Where has anyone stated that there wil be long leveling curves? Hell, where has really anyone explained the level system, exp system and questing system in detail? you don't know about this at all. You are assuming just cause you played a Brad McQuaid game. I admit that I don't know either, but just playing Kreskin don't fly.

And about forcing guilds, Brad has repeatedly stated that they are designing the game to ahve enough content to support a large number of end game people. They problem with PoP and the rest of EQ1's expansions is that there is a predetirmed/hard-coded path of progresstion. there was no choice. You did it ONE way. Yeah some of the steps in between could be done in different order but the same content and mobs were involved. Brad sya they will ahve a world where there is enough content that if one is taken there is a perfectly good, equal in risk/reward somewhere else. He also put forth the thought.. What if the high end raid mobs (that you seem to think everyone will race too) are only spawnable via a quest. Hard to race there if you can't start the quest.

One of the reasons I like WoW is because the Warcraft universe has always been a techno-fantasy type setting, a la Arcanum. That and the universe doesnt take itself extremely seriously ;p
