so now that wow and eq2 are out...

are there still any other promising mmorpgs in work besides vanguard? during the past years people were looking forward to many games, swg, horizons, shadowbane, lineage2, ffxi, coh, eq2, wow, etc...
they are all out now and i didnt hear of any new projects starting. did wow just drain all attention or is there really only vanguard left atm?

Crappy thread title.

There are still plenty of MMORPGs in development and as usual most of them suck.

Middle Earth Online
Matrix Online (retail very soon)
D&D Online

Vanguard is the only one people are really counting on being any good.

EDIT: Middle Earth "time based advancement" sounds like the most idiotic MMORPG feature in the history of the genre.

Vanguard and Guild Wars (though GW isn't really a MMORPG, more like a distraction to play for short periods at a time) are the only MMOGs that I'm currently hyped about. As said somewhere else (can't remember where), the next great MMORPG will most likely come from a relatively unknown company, just like EQ.

With the amount of money and time it takes to develop these games now I serious doubt that.

The way I understand it, Turbine was pretty much chained to the wall in so far as what they could do with AC2. Unless they've undergone a Verant/SoE-style developer team switch, the Turbine devs I remember from my days in AC were a good group of guys that were communicative with the community, had innovative ideas, and had the knowledge to make a good game to go with the desire to make a good game. AC got severely overlooked by the MMO community due to being released around the same time as EQ's "glory days", and it's a shame, because it was a great little game. Most of the people I hear talk shit about AC never even played it, or are assuming it was bad because AC2 was bad.

Despite AC2, I have faith in the Turbine guys to make a good D&D MMO, bearing in mind if it's possible in the first place, which I have my doubts about.

AC2 didn't do well because it released without much content or any semblance of balance. Was just too much broken and missing. If they had waited another year and released an actual game they would have done a lot better.

I played AC a couple of months back in '00 when my uncle sent me a copy for my B-day (he works for MS, got it for dirt cheap). It was a pretty decent game with some interesting elements, not the least of which was the monthly, world changing content updates. Too bad I was hip-deep in EQ by that time or else I might have taken a more serious look.

Turbine controls both ACs now and I guess they've done fairly well with both. It'll be interesting to see what they can pull off with the D&D franchise.

between those two i 'd say middle earth online will be the smaller of the two.

IF- and this is a big IF- D&D online is done right it will be a very good game (3.5 ruleset modified for online play) and popular.

IF i ever have a free day (work and 3 kids= no free time) i'm gonna try to get to westwood and see what i can find out (i live ~40 miles from turbine) for my websites.

I worry that Vanguard won't do anything exciting and new. I hate the idea that they might do another situation where you have tanks, dps, healers, and you go tank this boss while this guy heals you so you can get an item with a small upgrade blah blah etc....

Doing something completely different doesn't mean the game will be good, so whatever is created it's gonna have to be damn nice. I'm speaking moreso about combat and rewards.

d&d online is also set in the eberron campaign setting

maybe they can make this setting fun for a MMO, but when i was at my local hobby shop last, i could not justify spending $39.95 US on this campaign setting, maybe i'm just a dirty FR addict, but it just don't feel like d&d to me

D&D online

eberron was created for the online game first and I bet someone said it would be wise to release it via D20 to familiarize the faithful. But think about the potential of D&D online. Their first 4 expansions are already completely designed and tested with an extremely rich lore. After eberron, you've got Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, Dark Sun, Ravenloft, Dragonlance, Spelljammer... Then you have uber dungeons like temple of elemental evil, Against the giants though Queen of the demonweb pits, and more.

The content potential is huge, and a lot of the rules already have "generic" versions so having a content creation system would be reasonable.

D&D has two image problems:
1) parents won't want little timmy playing in case he turns into a satan worshipping suicide cult member
2) people who won't play D&D paper won't play D&D MMORPG

Middle Earth Online: Limited story, can't just add someone badder than Sauron
