Well I joined the dark side last night...

Finally broke down after another boring night of wow , and downloaded the free trial.

First impressions :

Graphics: Along with my avid hate for soe, this was my main sticking point with eq2, from the screenies I had seen in the past I though the character graphics were a sad joke, Now after playing the game I have to say they are actaully better in motion
and the spell effects blow wow's out of the water.

I normaly play fighter type chars (Main was SK/Beast) in the first EQ (you can see why I hate EQ/sony) but the spell effects on the mage char I tried out were pretty amazing. The first lighting call spell and the chains (root) spell were a sight to see. I've never seen a mmog where actuall freaking chains appear out of thin air.

The water as well (at least in the trial Isle) looks amazing , Wow graphics are great but to me EQ2's are much more immersive from the little I have seen.

Character graphics and animations were gay compared to wow, standing still they look al right but people move kinda herky jerky, but I can live with that I guess.

QUesting was fun, and I died two times in a few hours play which to me is a good thing, the game is not too easy as wow is and grouping is actually fun and encoraged with the looking for group tool.

the UI:
is too much like linage's UI for me, icons are too big dunno I need a custom one I think, wow UI is cleaner and more natural feeling I think.

All in all so far I have to say don't listen to the wow fan boys
in 3 hours play in EQ2 I have to say I felt more drawn into the world. The begining story does a great job of that, you can actually feel the lore a bit more than Wow. WOW has tons of lore but you kind of have to look for it, in EQ2 I felt you start out with choosing sides right away and feel like you are part of some greta struggle.

Gona play the free trial for a few weeks and see if it totally bores
me like wow , but the challenge already kinda of has me hooked.
wow is too easy and I also feel there are too few classes in wow.

EQ2 seems to have much more spell/style diversity for melees and casters, at least on paper.

Peace Out

I play wow for two reasons.

1) I want to do end game stuff without being locked into 10+hours a day of playing. I understand that MC may take a good long time to clear but if a guild wanted to it could be done in a series of 3-4 hr a day sessions and such once the encounters were learned.

I know this will bore the hell out of the 10hrs a day people but seriously, why cater the end game only to those with that much time? End game should be for capable people, not for those with 3x the time.

Now on that note, the raid bugs currently make it so you need 40 people who never freaking log off to do but I think that will be fixed eventualy once the lockouts are gone.

2) PvP

While WoW's pvp at this point in time is pointless it sure blows the heck out of the bluebie fest that is eq2. A game without PvP is totaly worthless to me and I know this is true for many others. One of the reasons WoW is sucessfull is it caters to the pvp crowd (look at all the PvP servers with High pop).

I have more posts than 1, Just not posted in a while I think my info got erased when the board got hacked back some months ?

As for the chains spell I mentioned , I've seen shackle undead what I am saying is as you cast the spell in EQ2 a huge bunch of chains swirl around you and then fly towards your target.

If you've ever read the death gate cycle , its how I always imagined a binding type spell would look.

Put it like this in wow there are very few spells I just run around casting for the heck of it just because they look so cool, also in wow alot of times I can't tell what spell a char is casting by just looking at them. The effect might be cool but the initial casting animations are 80% the same for each race.

In EQ2 it seems that alot of spells have completely unique casting animations- I'm only level 10 though so alot of this could change.

Belive me I hate SONY but I love myslef more .... I wanted so bad for EQ2 to fail, but when it comes down to it, I just want to have fun, WOW is fun but it wears on you after a while , its just to freaking easy to solo, I feel no real sense of acomplishment for doing anything.

SOmtimes when I am farming I get blue stuff I can sell for 20-30G stuff like that although coool for the average gamer takes away from the more hardcore imo.

Hopefully battlegrounds owns and there is more to do going forward in WOW , I wont cancel till I see how all that shakes down but I have to say I'm disapointed on how the wow DEVs are handling things so far

I really think you need to play WoW with a different perspective. Farming isn't the way to play the game. Do instances with small groups. You get both the challange of playing your class perfectly and the reward of lots of items to sell/burn/AH.

I've done instances, then again I play a Hunter, not really the best class for instances, the 5 person group limit in wow sucks since you need a

healer, warrior, mage always. that leave (at least on the horde side) shamans, hunters, rogues, druids, warlocks to fill in two slots.

rogues and shams are great classes and of course they are a ton of them so theres really no place for an unfinished class like hunters imo.

PLus with no LFG tool (yet) it gets old shouting for groups. If EQ2 starts to suck as I go higher I might level up a warrior or mage since right now hunters blow.

PVP

I feel you on the PVP angle, thats the main reason I'll come back to WOW if they implement it. Heck I played EQ1 on RZ back when they had full item loot and I enjoyed it

with Zero looting in WOW I can;t trally call it PVP anyways, plus you have to kill folks upwards of 3 or 4 times, since they come back so fast. What is in WOW is not PVP, its a Joke so I can't say I'll miss that aspect.

in my guild we've got a three person group consisting of hunter/hunter/mage. theyre up to 41ish and have done every instance including SM (all wings) like that.

just sayin you dont have to have the warrior/priest thing to win.

From what I saw with EQ2, there is no where the time investment at the high end as there was in EQ1. Like the good ole 8hr+raids.

In EQ2 it takes you longert to level up, but what does that matter if your having fun doing it. If it takes 3 times as long as wow to level to 50 what does that matter, you can still play in 1-2 hour chunks /shrug

Most of the instances I did were without mages, they are by no means mandatory.

the thing is, i am not gona get loots for doing instance with small group, its retarded.

the only way you "can" do strat/scholo with 5 man group is when you actually have a good people that knows what they are doing, and these people usually have all the loots from those place, why should i go to strat for nothing? with another 4 guys that needs absolute nothing as well -_-.

i only go to those places to help out my guildie =/

Absolutely nothing like Furor. Entirely different word patterns and emotional content (That's nil, for the scientists).

I wonder what will happen now. Some sort of WoW holocaust is developing. Is Dest going to give them their 14 days, and then blog up the main site with some Vanguard character specs/fanfiction? Will everybody here scuttle to EQ2?

Questions, indeed, that will be answered just in time for E3, where I will personally hunt down Brad McQuaid for some answers. Yessiree.

I'm not going to listen to people reviewing mmo's anymore unless they have played it for at least 4-5 months. Wow wins from EQ2 in the "omg first bunch of levels on my first char ever in this game, roxxor!" department anyway.
