what really made eq fun: grief.

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu.../griefers.mspx

sure you may want to deny it, but nothing was more enjoyable then knowing that there was someone else you could fuck with/go head to head against. i hate instancing, i hate code that goes beyond good sense(npcs running back in "evade" mode), and i hate how like someone else put it so well "we are in our own little sandbox". i know no game will bring it back the way old EQ did, because it would be developer suicide... but tell me im not the only one who missed the fact that retards just being in my general vacinity played an impact on my game, and that i had to adapt because of it.

I was just reading this one.

Appearantly using the word PWN can indicate illegal activity.

Quote:
Leet words possibly indicating illegal activity:

"warez" or "w4r3z": Illegally copied software available for download.

"h4x": Read as "hacks," or what a computer hacker does.

"sploitz" (short for exploits): Vulnerabilities in computer software used by hackers.

"pwn": A typo-deliberate version of own, a slang term that means to dominate. This could also be spelled "0\/\/n3d" or "pwn3d," among other variations. Online video game bullies or "griefers" often use this term.
Oh those crazy kidders at Microsoft, what won't they think of next?

I was griefed today. Some rogue was throwing daggers at mobs I was winding up fireballs on. For all the noobs this means I get aggro because mine hurts more but he gets the kill because he tagged it first. So, I'm killing mobs I can't loot....

I get pissed after the second one... its no accident. I grabbed a train and frost nova'd it right on top of him and the mob he pulled. They start hitting him as I run off. Then they chase me for a few seconds after nova breaks then go to reset... only they don't reset. They head straight for the rogue and relieve him of the 20% hp he had left after having to kill his own damn mob.

He rezed in but didn't leave so I did it again.

Does that make me a griefer?

Ironically, on of my best friends in college (who also played EQ) and I were just discussing this same thing. We came to the conclusion that what really made EQ fun throughout its entire lifetime was the competition and griefing between guilds.

Sadly, with WoW using instancing for every high end encounter - I barely even know of the existance of other guilds on my Server =/

I gotta say I enjoyed the EQ competition. It made the game more hardcore.

There still is competition

Competition still exists in the game, only in a more healthy form.

There are several guilds raiding Molten Core and Onyxia on my server and a big motivating factor to excel is to "beat the other guys!" Whether its trying to do something before the others can, or trying to prove that they aren't so special and you can do what they did too, competition exists between us without leading to all the horrible sociological problems associated with fighting over content.

this so-called competition you speak of is non-existant.

you are only competing with yourselves. while that is competition to some, the absence of 'racing' (as much as some won't admit how much that did add to the game) is a key factor.

competing for an encounter, while also trying to learn it kept you playing. logging on early and logging off late for another attempt. now you simply call it and start the next day. there really is no rush or drive to be the first ones to do anything since every major encounter will be there when people are ready to go.

mabye that's what some want, and i can't fault anyone for wanting this type of envoirnment, but some of us just don't.

while i won't say racing for an encounter was the best thing since sliced bread, it sure kept things interesting.

Bull

There is still racing. I still see people login early and logoff late because we're racing to be the first ones to do something before the other guys do it. We're both running the race at the same time and we can see them in the next lane over. If they do well then that pushes us to kick it up another notch.

Griefing isn't competition, its pathological anti-social behavior at its worst. It doesnt mean you succeed because you are better at performing the task, just that you got the opportunity to attempt the task first or worse-yet intentionally sabotaged someone else's ability to even try.

If there's no competition then why do guilds post updates on their websites boasting about what they killed? Why do people still strive to be the first serverwide or gamewide to do anything? Why is there a post about FoH killing Onyxia on the front page right now? She's going to be there for any other server to kill right?

Yes 'Racing" added a certain immediacy to the game because if you didnt do it NOW you would likely never get to, but for each person who won the race there were MANY more who were left shut out due to various factors (not the least of which was timezones) that had nothing to do with their ability to play the game. In 2005 the notion that you have to compete with other customers to have a chance at enjoying a game is ludicrous. It was a bad idea years ago and while there may be some direct competition in the game it is good that "griefing" is done with.

MMORPGs are becoming the fast food joints of the game world. "Your way, right away at EQ2/WoW NOW!" or "We're in YOUR world now!"

I never though I would say this but I agree that competition for the "big" kills in the game was in most ways a GOOD thing. The kills were perceived to mean more to the victors.

Right now if you had the man power anyone could just walk up to an instance and get their own custom mob ready for them.

"Welcome to McBlizzard, May I take your order"

"Ummmm.. My guild will take Molten Core and an order of Ragnaros to go plZ"

"Thank you drive through the instance" (If you are lucky enough to not have the Blizzard-made cockblock of the raid bug not effect your guild)

Rinse, repeat in a couple days.

This is the main reason I am looking forward to Vanguard. For an immersion factor it doens't make sence that the same named mob could be kill 5 times by 5 different guilds at the same fucking time. It just makes the accomplishment seem, cookie cutter and less special.

I admit that the racing and cockblocking sucks, maybe that just means there needs to be more content at that level. Instead of having one epic encounter designed for that particular raid level. Have 3 or 4. Make it where if quild was taking one of them, there was a choice as to a great alternate secondary target.

Also this points out the issues with complete linear progression. A "defined" path that you have to take this mob before you can take ths one, before you can even condier looking at this one. The high end game needs mroe choices and needs more Open-endedness...

Yeah, I agree, griefing is what I remember most when I think back of the fun times of EQ.

And yet everyone bashed me for hating on instances when I said this would happen that everyone would have the same exact cookie cutter loot because they can boringly farm the raid mobs since they have absolutely no competition or drive.
