WoW Mages really that nerfed??

I am just now getting to play WoW and have started to play an Undead Mage. I was a Wizard in EQ and wanted to stay with the same job. The forums on the Blizzard site though are complaining that Mages are nerfed to hell and are almost worthless compaired to other DPS classes. Is this true or are these just whine asses bitching because its not as easy as it was before the patches?

Mages are not a DPS class. They are more like a support class now. Forums are right if a tad over the top.

Mages are beyond easy to level up, at low-mid levels they do a ton of damage, though at high level they seem to pay for it. Warriors were the opposite, were very tough to level til 40, but were rewarded, now they suck all around though.

Nothing personally but what dose it matter? If you weren’t playing before the ‘nerf’ then why worry about the after effects of it, I mean hell if you never knew about the ‘nerf’ in the first place you would have just played the mage anyways and decided how you felt about it regardless right?

Anyways I play an Undead mage on test 4 and I’m not running into any walls based on my class, hell if anything I’d probably say I’m a step above some other classes in terms of what quest I can do at my level (18). I’ve actually finished a few orange and red quests simple because I have the ability to unload huge amounts of damage if I focus on a single mob without worrying about mana preservation. I actually finished ‘A Husbands Revenge’ at level 18 (orange quest, level 22 mob) just before the servers went down after seeing many a solo 20 -22 player try it because I was a mage and though out my approach a little (killed two single pulls to clear mobs path, wait for him to walk down alone, pulled, fought for a min or two and used two potions, fairly simple).

As a Wizard and Warlock from EQ however I will point out I think the WoW mage is horrible in terms of kitting and root / nuke tactics, but I’m not to bothered by it because I’m still fairly young (only level 18) and things might change with different / more talents and spells. On top of that the fighting in WoW is fairly quick overall, on average I use 4-5 spells pre fight and take little to no damage so both tactics from EQ (kitting and root / nuke) seem worthless now.

I dunno, even at level 17, my mage kicked ass in WoW. I do hate the new regent requirement for slowfall, that was more of a fun spell then anything(at this level anyway)..

Anyone pre-40 can just shut up and realize your mage is fine (with the exception of the new costly reagents).

The dps complaining is accurate. We can't out dps a rogue ever, nor even some really well equipped warriors, without using AEs. Single target vs. a well-equipped rogue is a friggin joke.

The downtime complaints, also accurate. We sit on our ass far more than any other class does, and no, the killing speed of a mage doesn't come close to making up for it, compared to the warrior over there who stops every 8-10 mobs to bandage for 8 seconds. Some people love to point out that this is why we have summoned water. I call them dumbfucks.

Utility, yup we have lots of that. Summoned water is great for the healers, sheep is useful anywhere that it works. Buffs and porting are irritating now with the reagent changes. I feel sorry for the poor fucker who just hit L20 and found out that his teleports cost 10s per use now.

The reagent thing alone is probably enough to get me to say 'fuck it' to playing a mage again, but there's more. Cloth itemization is gay. Richard Simmons in assless chaps? Not even close to the gay of WoW cloth armor.

There's actually one cool item in the game currently for casters, it adds 2% to your crit chances. Everything else is just int, int, way too fucking much spi, and some sta if you're lucky. Nothing to even approach the dps increases a melee gets from a couple blue weapons and some crit/atk power gear.

Is there hope for the class? Sure. It was great at one time (and no you fucktards I'm not talking about invis/pyro so don't even start with me) and I expect someday they'll probably put in some items that don't suck and finish the spell lists. After seeing every patch for months just make the class less fun without giving anything back to make up for the nerfs, I'm not taking a chance though.

I'm asking because from what I've read at first the Mage was supposed to be a DPS class. I wanted to know if the bitching was true and Mages were no longer considered a top DPS class.

Mages are still quite good. I play mine all the time. Our biggest strength is in fact AE, a fact you don't hear from all the whiners out there.

Our AE damage is huge, it is used in most, if not all, high level instances and some non instance stuff.

One example, at 57 (solo), I beat four level 55 demons (in jadenar) and two orcs SIMULTANEOUSLY, using AE. The demons were doing some evil knock back during that. I did not kite these, I survived through using expendable items and mana shield. With a group, I'd have AE'd without so much expense (vs these mobs).

In addition to awesome AE we mages get decent dps, some crowd control, and some useful misc abilities.

When I played (up to level 17 or so) in phase 2 beta the mage owned...but sounds like they suck I won't be playing one if I go WoW on release...I wanna play the equivalent of an EQ druid....a class that gets all the love for years.

I think mages are fine.. Currently there is not really any class that stands out as being far too powerful or very underpowered. If there are any deviations, most are not that significant at this point. If some are discovered, you can be sure they'll be addressed, so I really don't see any reason to worry over the class you want to play being too underpowered. In short, I think playing whatever class appeals to you the most will be most rewarding - they all have their places.

Lyceum & ????. Maybe Strath, Skeleton overkill in Scholo? What possible non-instanced use?

We are kings of AE (requires 15 talent points). Too bad its mostly a trivial title. Almost all places to AE don't require AE they just make it more efficient for that small area of clearing trash.

King of Trash Clearing! Woot!

Also AE isn't mentioned at all in our Blizzard defined Class Role.

"Damage is the name of the mage game, and they do it well."

Thats why i went with hunter instead of mage Vorph, the dps increase from items just isnt there. Hunter still attacks from range, items do increase dps very reliably and when you make the mob mad you have mail, and you get a pet.
