More about VU and Blizzard

Not directly about blizzard, but I think this can add to your skeptism. I posted before about blizzard and their reputation with VU, because the board didn't seem to know much about it, but anyways.

The statement's implication is that VUG, angry with Valve's "public statements," could sit on Half-Life 2 for up to six months. But would VUG use this six-month window as leverage to force Valve to back down from demands contained in its original August 14, 2002 lawsuit?
The part about Interplay was interesting as well. I hope VU goes under and doesnt come back.

Yea I agree, kinda explains alot about those 2 games also. Note that this article was written in late sept though. Who knows what has happened since then, I'm trying to dig it up. What if hl2 doesn't come out november after all. :-(

Don't care about HL2, but I believe valve gave up some of their claims and it will be out shortly. Certainly they have the advertising up.

But we've seen the WoW forced servers stuff, so we have plenty of evidence that VU are a bunch of screw ups.

Why, so Blizzard and/or Valve can be sold to the highest bidder as part of Chapter 7 bankruptcy proceedings?

I'd rather not risk either of them ending up in the hands of EA thank you very much.

Please EA would be easily outbid by Microsoft and then we'd have everything forced onto a console.

That Valve vs. Vivendi stuff was from before the Nov. 15th date was announced. I'm sure they'll keep on suing each other, but even Vivendi isn't stupid enough to sit on that cash cow past the xmas season.

After reading all this shit I've come to the conclusion that most good (ground-breaking or just plain improved to the point of notice) games will only ever come from companies not owned by some parent corporation.

Not too many of those left I'm afraid =p.

Insomniac Games is the only one I can think of, just off the top of my head.

VU fucked up Men of Valor and Leisure Suit Larry. However, Tribes: Vengeance was amazingly good, especially after how shitty Tribes 2 was.

Rot in hell VU.

I'm quite ignorant of how all of this works and what not. Why would Blizzard or any major game developing studio need a parent company? Once they get established don't they have enough capital to produce a game?

Tuco,
they need the distribution channels that these parent companies have. Thats how they get their game on the shelves of gamespot, best buy etc.

Oh.

Why can't they have their own 'distribution channels' ? How hard is it to 'sell' your product to all of the major selling places?

I know there's a reason, I'm just trying to understand why.

Good question. You could sell a lot of copies if the only distribution channel you had was Wal-Mart. It's not exactly rocket science.
