You can really see the influence that both design teams have upon each other, especially when it comes to artwork and the basic 'feeling' of the game.

One thing to be sure about, there's going to be some interesting competition between EQ2 vs. VSoH vs. WoW

I wonder which one will come out on top, and which one will actually be the better game.

The city reminds me very much of Camelot, except with some spiffier little things (clotheslines between houses!) honestly.

For an Alpha those are good screenshots. You can still see some crummier looking ones, but I believe they stated that they aren't going to fully finish the purdy factor until later in anticipation of upcoming tech advances between now and when they're read to beta/gold.

They damn well better look good. With the pedigree of their artists, anything but absolute top notch art is going to be a dissapointment.

The environment feels like Myst (in a good way). It accomplishes what it seems like they're trying to.

Vanguard will be, without a doubt, the most beautifully designed gameworld we've ever seen in an MMOG. It will be expansive and intimidating and incredible. Visually there will be nothing that comes close to it even in beta phases.

The gameplay is questionable at this point primarily because Sigil has not (and will not) release details of their 'secret sauce' (Brad's fav quote when referring to new mechanics) and what actually makes the game tick. Can't blame him - vultures like SOE would snatch the ideas and have pared down versions in EQ2 before you could blink.

The basics:
If you like slow and tedious levelling, farming mobs over and over, corpse recoveries, long travel times, class-based systems and forced grouping then Vanguard will most certainly be a game for you. I'm not criticizing but I won't sugar-coat it either. The game (despite Brad's claim to be attracting *all* playstyles) will not be casual friendly. For most of the people on these boards that is good news though some may sigh a bit. Many casual players will buy it, play it and like it and eventually burn out on it just as they did with EQ. Powergamers will find that Vanguard is the wet dream they've been waiting for most of their lives.

I really like the look of the towns, looks almost real I think it all just fits together very well.

It seems way too "clean" to me.

..

Thats the only mmorpg im looking forward too.. Quite frankly im sick of "easy" games. I want the grind back.. i want it to mean something to level.. i want to be pissed when i die and i want to struggle to get my corspse back.. i want to have to ask complete strangers to help me fight through a dungeon..... thats all great gameplay.. as much as everyone "hates" it... its also borring to play a game that is too easy (diablo, wow, sb, eq, etc).

There needs to be a game where it means something to be max level again. Right now i feel there is a large market for a difficult game.. a game where truely good players will emerge.... most of the 2nd-3rd generation games are based around "everyone will win" ideology. Its pathetic and borring at the same time.

Dont get me wrong.. i think games like wow and shadowbane have their place.... but the fact that the market is being littered with diablo-style games is rediculous. Any idiot can get to max level in these games given time, im hoping Vanguard will be different; much like the original vision(tm).

The trolls look more like the creature from the black lagoon.

I think the architecture looks fantastic. If I can interact with large amounts of that world such as going in every room of those town buildings, I think I would be quite happy. The flying drake and that tower are quite impressive too.

They seem to have the overall scheme of the world well underway. Right down to a good bit of lore judging by the titles of the shots.

Is it just me or do the Sigil pre/alpha screenshots look better than most if not all EQ2 SS ? The level of detail, shadowing and realtime lighting effects are second to none at this point.

To me this is a great sign that Brad and company have a concrete goal that sets the bar very high and by the looks of the screenshots they may well over shot there own goals.

yes they look nice, because they've been working on them for fucking EVER. not bashing them, but this is because of a combination of sony rushing out content to get money (not a problem with the artists or designers) and brad and co. having a gigantic cock up there ass fueling their need to consider themselves better. thus they're alpha screenshots fall in line with when their relase date could have been.
