Anyone familiar with BitTorrent can help ?

I don't know anything about this technical shit, so someone needs to explain!

First off, people say to open or forward ports. What is that, and how do I do it. Secondly, do I need to?

I connect straight to the cable modem, and from my understanding the bandwith is shared with the neighborhood or something. Well, since Hurricane Charley plowed through here, and most of the neighborhood doesn't have power, I would think my download speed would be extremely high...

I don't know anything about firewalls either, how do I know if I have one... (thinking maybe a default one with Windows XP? who knows, I sure don't)

If I had to, how do I go about setting up the ports and stuff. Step by step instructions preferably... For example, Open [insert something], click on [insert something], then click on [insert something] etc

On past Bit Torrent downloaders, I was able to sustain download speeds of 500 KB/s. On this one, I can't get higher then 30 KB/s.. What's the difference? Has something changed, am I doing something wrong, etc?

You only have to forward ports if you have a router. If you aren't sure what a router is, you probably don't have one.

Well, even if everyone on your line was offline, you are still probably speed capped probably anywhere from 256K/sec to 3000K/sec.

Do you have Norton Internet Secruity or ZoneAlarm installed? If not, you probably don't have an installed Firewall.

To see if your XP firewall is installed, go to:

- Start->Control Panel->Network Connections
- Right click on "Local Area Connection"-> Properties
- Click the "Advanced" tab.
- If you have a check in the "Protect my computer yayaya" box, your XP firewall is enabled.

As far as actually forwarding ports... that I dunno.

If you are connecting straight to your cable modem and do not know if you have a firewall, you're probably fine (for downloading off BT anyways, your computer is very unsecure though). If you have XP SP2, you have the firewall enabled by default unless you went and disabled it yourself, though it sounds like you don't have it.

The reason you are getting 30KBs is that there are probably upwards of 3k+ people trying to download the patch right now.

Plus, there's no more way to set your upload rate on their insanely crappy BT client, so you're probably choking your bandwidth.

Blizzard really needs to get a clue on BT design, or just make . torrent links so people can use good clients like Bittornado.

It all depends on the amount of seeds (people with the full file) and the peers (people with partial downloads) and how much they are uploading to the 'swarm'. You just gotta upload a ton and hope someone else returns the favor!

500 kb/s is insane, though 30kb/s isn't bad at all.

There's a critical flaw in their new BT client. They removed the thing to set your upload speed, and are attempting to use every last bit of upstream avaliable.

Anyone with half a brain when it comes to networking knows that if you saturate the upstream on either cable or DSL you are fucked on the downstream side. That's the whole reason why BT clients *have* the fucking option in the first place.

The problem was that the previous client would let you set upstream to modem and you'd get several hundred KB/s downstream. Again, that's not following the BT spec... it should have more or less balanced them out. Instead of fixing it up to spec, they just maxed out everyone and removed the combobox.

So basically, you don't need to open ports if you're connecting your cable modem directly to the computer. 30 KB/s is about all you're going to get unless you happen to be one of the lucky people connected directly to the master seed.

PS- Connecting a cable modem directly to your pc is begging every 12 year old skript kiddie to root you and load up a bunch of trojans, irc bots, and all sorts of other shit. If it hasn't happened already, I'd be shocked. Get a Netgear or Linksys router if you value whatever is on your machine.

http://www.netlimiter.com is your friend. It won't give you amazing upload speeds again, but it will allow you to at least use your computer for something other than the patch.

In my experience using Torrents...it doesn't matter what your U/L max is set to. I use Azureus, which is a java based and set mine to 5 KBPS max upload globally. I still get 100+ kpbs download no matter.

My speeds aren't capped though. I can run websites in the background with no problems at all, it's loading the sites instantaneously so it doesn't seem to be using all of my bandwith.

I'm also getting the could not connect to tracker message, which is stopping my download/upload until I restart it.

Seems to me there is something holding it back.... I just don't know what, or how to fix it.

I'm getting that can't connect to tracker box too and my network is set up perfectly. It's their client. Right now I'm doing about 30 on both ul and dl.

Owell, like it matters anyway, it's time for sleep and the servers still won't be up when it does finish in all likelihood.

Another thing is that it seems that not many people are connecting to each other. In my own personal case, I'm getting at most 4 people at once per attempt (netstat is <3 for this). That usually means crap for download speeds unless it's a seeder with a nice throughput.

Considering this is related to MMORPG's, it belongs here. WoW, get this, is an MMORPG. This thread is referring to downloading the patch of said MMORPG. This forum is MMORPG general discussion. Get it?

Basically the reason most of the players are getting 30kb/s max is people fucked up.

Last patch, assholes set their upload to modem speed(1kb/s upload) but got awesome downloads(120kb/s) anyways. Now Blizzard is forcing your download to very closely mirror your upload. Y helo thar 30kb/s up/down. I use third party software to limit my connection to 25kb/s(out of 30kb/s) upload, but I can't break the 30kb/s barrier. Anyone without a decent upstream is fucked in the ass.

Thanks Blizz!

Ya, I downloaded a program to watch the download rates of the people I am connected to and even if I get someone with a great connection, it caps it at about 30 Kb/s.

For example, I will only be seeding from him for a little bit, at 30 KB/s, then two other people will connect, each giving me 10 KB/s. Instead of going to 50 KB/s, the 30 drops to 10 so the 30 KB/s I can download stays a constant.
