+3 Internets | EQ2 at Quakecon Just thought I'd mention that the EQ2 beta is playable at the NVIDIA booth at Quakecon. I went today, and got to play for an hour, going through the tutorial on the boat, and playing around some on the Isle of Refuge. There were 40 people on the (only visible) beta server when the account I got to play on was logged in, and the only name I recognized of people walking around was Allakhazam. In the starting zone, the isle, monsters ignored me quite a bit... Hardly any were social, and most (but not all) had no aggro range. I didn't see much else that hasn't already been said, but if anyone has questions about that newbie experience I might be able to answer, feel free to ask. It was fun, looked really nice, and makes me want the rest of beta to start even sooner. *Grins* If you can get out to the conference to play, I recommend it. (Quakecon is just outside Dallas, TX.)

| I imagine it was running on a pretty nice rig? Did you get to do anything besides play with the engine? IE: Did you see the character equip/skills/stats/etc.. screens. Was the voice acting in anywhere yet. Details, man, details! ![]() |

+3 Internets | Ok, here's some more details then: No limits on what you could do, so of course I went thorugh every menu. The game was running at 1024x768, and seemed quite smooth. I created a male high elf character, and when I got to the island, I picked priest as my first class choice. This gave me three spells, a DD, a heal, and a buff, the first two of which were automatically memm'ed and put in my toolbar at the bottom of the screen. You can cast spells from your spellbook. ! When I wanted to cast the buff, I just targeted myself, opened the book, and was able to cast the spell. You can't heal outside of groups. I saw another player who was resting, and figured I'd cast a heal on them. Nope, you can't heal people outside your group... Swimming has a very nice blur effect that takes place for the portions of the screen that are underwater. Yes, it really does correctly handle situations like when you've got the camera right at the water line. Everything above is clear, and below is water blurred. In terms of animations, I liked 99% of what I saw. There were only two things that stuck out as not looking good: One, when in third person and strafing, the animation just didn't look good. Not as smooth as all the others. Two, when I was on the boat doing the tutorial, there was a female character standing on the left side of the boat wearing pants. These pants are cloth, and move around as the wind affects them... For one moment though, they suddenly ignored the legs inside them, and were blown almost straight up in the air... You know, gust of wind hitting a dress.... But it wasn't a dress. Just strange. ![]() There were some extremely simple resource gathering skills available... There were some roots on the ground that I could target, walk up to, and use gathering on, to get roots in my inventory. There was a school of fish in the water, that I had to stand right next to, and then I could use fishing, watch the little gathering bar go left to right, and then I'd have a fish. No animations yet, so I suspect these are just placeholder and not complete. They were big into bug reporting in conversations, at each choice, there's an extra option, "report a bug in this conversation". The conversations I saw never had a problem though, so I never used it. There are two computers with the game at Quakecon. On the second, the account had a character that was already in Freeport. The person playing there went and bought a house / apartment / room. He went inside, and there was a "Slumlord" waiting for him, to explain the room and give him a table to decorate it with (it was totally empty to begin with). Looked nicely done, but I had to leave to go to a talk at that point. I also saw the skills screen. There are LOTS of skills in EQ2... I didn't count, but I'd guess the character I made had something like 50 different skills. Skill gains were like EQ1, with "You gained skill in *whatever*. (32)" popping up from time to time. Most of the ones I used started around 30, and went up at least a little while I was doing level 1-3.
