Vanguard screenies~

http://www.vanguardsoh.com/screenshots.php

^^^ first official screenshots of Vanguard.

Even in its pre-alpha stage, already it blows EQ2 out of the water graphically (and in all probability, everything else).

Discuss?

The architecture seems a bit too perfect and clean,
if they throw some dirt on all those buildings along with cracks and whatnot (maybe the current building textures are just placeholders hm), maybe the trees need a rework too, more curves please.

Anyways they are still nice and the distances are appealing (on a horseback).

The landscapes and buildings seem vaguely reminiscent of SWG to me. The water is much more high tech though. It might be partially me and my work machine, but I cant see shit in those night shots. Just some fire and some hard to discern mobs. The pitch black nights of EQ for races without innate night vision is not one of the higher things on my list of stuff I want to see resurrected in Vanguard.

How exactly does that landscape look at better than EQ2? The models look slightly more 'rough' or whatever, and less plastic, but the landscape looks about the same.

Hmmmm...

For a minute, let's forget the fact that the graphics, purely from an artistic standpoint look fantastic. Let's also forget that this isn't even in alpha. Let's also overlook the fact that Brad has said that the game is playable at 1280x1024 by the dev's machines (nothing special, basically just a very high-end comp), compared to EQ2's lagginess.

Ok, forgetting all that, then yeah: the graphics aren't really that great~

It's just my personal preference, but I really can't get into the photorealistic fantasy stuff. Something about the worlds seem so fabricated.

I somewhat agree. However Sigil seems to be doing it more seamlessly then EQ2 is. Unless EQ2 has been holding back on showing off the actual PC models, Vanguard is already leaps and bounds above them.

I think the reason I dislike the "hyper-realism" approach is two fold. For one, it's hard to do it without demanding that customers have a top of the line computer, and also, because eventually ALL graphics become outdated. People realize flaws, and, sooner or later no matter how well put together it is, it starts to look shitty.

I have a hard time believing that would run smooth on anyones machine, let alone with a few people on the screen. They will probably have to go the 'more with less' route of WoW since they've got a kickass artist to do some kickass textures. Doesn't matter if stuff is low poly when you've got great artists to make up for it.

Holy shit

I mean, holy shit... Those are quite impressive. I haven't been impressed by any EQ2 screenshots, save mildly by one or two, but despite the fact that I'm not a fan of the high fantasy style...I must say these are beautiful screens.

Now, WoW is designed in such a way that if you have older hardware you can still run it well. Considering that, it looks quite awesome. EQ2 -- well, we know about EQ2. Vanuard will probably land in 2006 or later, and very well may be targeted at what is middle-to-high end for that time, which means high end now to way faster than what is now high end. If you target higher and have a talented 3D team and a good engine, these graphics are possible. In my uneducated opinion.

maybe hype is getting to some people's heads because I just don't find those screenshots to be all that good or appealing. But that's just my opinion.. I know that the game is not far into development but I'm somewhat doubtful that those views will change all that much with time. They aren't terrible, though.. We'll see.
