WoW Profile System

We have started a Profile Community for World of Warcraft today and if you want drop by and visit it

WoWEL - wow.ethologia.com

I hope we can establish this profile site for the future and I hope you support it somehow =)

I don't wish to be negative in any way, but didn't Blizzard state that they would have their own form of profile/magelo system instantiated within their forum/website?

Since you have obviously thought a lot about this, what is different about your website than what Blizzard will implement?

Yah, Blizzard said there would be a paper doll attached with your ingame profile for folks to view your gear, that would carry over to forum viewing which can probly be linked just like the old magelo to guild rosters.

First of we want to offer a customizable version for the users with deep statistics.

Also we have yet to see the Blizzard-Profile system.

Apparently even though Blizzard said they were gonna do it, they took too damn long to impliment it and impatient players simply did it themselves. Bravo.

What sort of deep statistics are you talking about?

I ask because I was pondering the idea of making a program(C++) that will parse large amounts of data from an all inclusive log file generated by WoW(IE: every text message/ingame occurance that my character recieves is put into this log file)

In it I could do a few things, most important to me is record my quests done(if they don't include something like this on release), and also, to see how many of each mob in the game I've killed. IE:
A Ravaging Bear: 20
An Undead Mongoose: 30

You get the picture.

If WoWEL did this, it would save me a lot of trouble. Hopefully I won't have to make a program that is so tailored to my desires.

So what exactly will be stored? I know you've thought about this for a while, but the obvious impediment to your site being popular is Blizzard already covering it.

Obviously according to your website you're going much further and beyond what blizzard is offering.

Quote:
Search through the database for characters, profiles and items
Compare yourself with other players using the ladders and comparisn
Offer you character to the whole player community of WoW
WoWEL Updater will keep your character profiles up to date without any efforts
Build your own dream profile using items from our database

The primary task of WoWEL Updater is to collect Item / NPC / Quest Data from Worlds of Warcraft
Right now it appears that WoWEL's advantage over Blizzard's planned implementation of profiles is that it stores quests(which Blizzard isn't doing afaik), and you can search/compare.

I think it might be more popular if it were a program that stored just about everything about your character, mobs killed, zones visited, players killed in pvp, highest damage dealt to a mob in one shot, etc, anything your character does.

Actually we at WoWEL are statistic fans and we like to add up numbers and stuff

We also have been working on this project since about 2 months and we actually cannot reveal too much of it (yea it suxx to say this), because of the beta-status of the game and the possible changes.

But you have give us also some new ideas with your posting what we greatly appreciate.

If Blizzard's system is limited to their own forums (their board software sucks!), then it's a no brainer for a third party to offer this service. Let's face it, with limited exception, the WoW boards are on their way to mimicing b.net.

Just a word of advice to thirdparty people doing projects like this. Automation. Don't expect people to have to manually add items to a database. If you can't have a program collecting the data ala Magelo Update or Lucy's Item Collector, forget it already.

Cosmos already does this dynamically in game. In fact, you won't ever have a reason to parse anything from a log file. It can all be done on the spot with the UI.

Awesome, that makes me a very happy man if I can keep a record of every mob I've killed, they had something like this in diablo, but it was reset or soemthign for every new game.

I've always liked knowing everything I can about what's going on around me, even if it does lead to Thotting everything(which takes away the mystery of it, somewhat)

Looks like there will be some competition for the best profiling system for WoW.

There's allready 3 different sites being worked on:
- http://www.wowcps.com (not live yet)
- http://www.wow-profiles.com (not live yet, but you can view a test profile at http://www.wow-profiles.com/view_profile.html?id=1)
- And finally, you'll have Blizzards own paper doll thingy.

Whether the third party sites will succeed or not, all depends on what Blizzard does with their system I suppose. If the do it well, no other sites can compete (Blizzard do have all the advantages here, having access to whatever data they want).

And right now, only people from wowcps.com have beta accounts I think, so they got a big advantage there...

Guess we'll see closer to release which site does it best.

Only problem with a program like that, is to not violate the World of Warcraft Terms of Use, especially section 1.c

But if they don't change their Terms of use by release, I've allready got an item collector that's working and not breaking the eula (worked on leaked alpha at least...)
