Rolling back DX won't make a difference. If a game was built on DX7 it would work with DX9 as they usually retain all their old aspects unless it was causing a huge problem, which I don't recall ever having happened.

I rolled back and it absolutely fixed my problems with EQ.

Just me though.

Were you having the same problems that I described?

A Ferrari runs hot too. We're talking about top performance here.
I'll be honest, I've never driven a Ferrari. But if a Ferrari is dumping all it's heat on your genitals like a laptop does, I think it should go back to the dealer

Not completely true. If you buy your laptop from Voodoo.ca (I think Alienware does this too), you can ship the laptop back to them with requests on what part(s) you want upgraded, and they'll do it for the cost of the parts and shipping. I think the only piece they won't upgrade is the motherboard.

They have regular laptops with the Centrinos and they also have desktop replacements. The downside is that they're very very expensive, cheapest one starts at like $2800.

Friend of mine bought one from them and loves it, weighs about 4-5 lbs, pretty thin, and runs stuff great.

I wanted to bump this thread because I was able to resolve my issue completely without having to roll back to DX8 (which didn't help me anyway).

It turns out that Dell releases its mobile video card drivers in as old a version as they can get away with. The current "up to date" GeForce Go FX drivers from Dell predate DX9.

Go here:

http://www.laptopvideo2go.com

Download the latest drivers and apply the modified .inf file as per the instructions. This allows you to use the latest and greatest drivers from Nvidia versus the 6 month old crap that Dell pushes.

This fixed my issue 100%. EQ now screams on the laptop at 1400x1050 with nearly all graphics settings turned on and/or maxed.

Another tidbit that I discovered is that the video cards in our laptops are indeed removable and upgradeable, unlike what someone claimed above. However, with the new drivers installed, the GeForce FX is more than adequate to run EQ and the remainder of my games very well.

Good job man. Anytime I had a patch turn my performance to shit I just checked for new drivers as one of the first things.

Well, yeah. That's just standard. But when the latest "official" drivers are older than Jesus, it makes things a bit more difficult. It's nice to know that there's a guy who does Dell's work for them.

You go from (this is off the top of my head) 2.2 to 2.8GB/s I think. Anyways, you won't notice a difference is what it comes down to.

AGP4X is only capable of transferring data at a maximum bandwidth of 1.06GB/s. Compared with all the existing buses in the system, it is rather low and 3D performance would bottleneck at the AGP port. There's really no point in having kickass technology like HyperTransport if the AGP is limiting data transfers at 266MHz (4 x 66MHz). Now that AGP bandwidth is doubled to 8X, the clock frequency will increase to 533MHz which means that it will transfer at about 2.1GB/s. This increase in bandwidth will directly help to improve the overall performance of the graphics subsystem. By how much? We'll investigate this further in this article.
To take advantage of the extra bandwidth, you need both a card and a board that supports agp 3.0 and are 8x comp. That quote above is also a little old. With AGP 3.0 and the new mobos and cards out, 8x goes up to almost 3GB/s

4x still maxes around 1GB/s.
