Why is this such a hot topic? Unless they have the server or are adhoc activating friends and family login accounts who gives a flying stinky?

OOooh they can hack localmode and see some art!!! wooo! Like that hasn't been done for every MMO ever put into any kind of public testing (including the really crappy ones).

The best part is getting to listen to the helmet wearers in irc saying "they're gonna hack the daemon" over and over again like they actually have some kind of inside track on the fat infoz.

Whatever. If anything, this is all just a big horrible IQ test.

they got the alpha client, they do not have the source code, they do not have the server code which if they had those - THEN i'd be worried.

they cannot log into the game - no valid user account/password

this shouldn't effect when the beta will start - i hope- cuz like all of you, i cannot wait to see what blizzard thinks is a beta game....

If you remember Warcraft 3 Beta...it was leaked and warforge set up a server. Granted if it was done with an MMORPG it would be a very very limited version of the game. Probably be able to run around and thats about it. It's a shame this has happened, but I thought it was inevitable (although I didn't think it would happen until beta).

Just take a look at the EQEMU - thats still a pile of shit and its been YEARS that they have been working on that.

The WC3 was totally different, all they had to do was setup some sort of chat and a match making system. A MMOPG is totally different. They have no concept on how zoning will work in WOW or anything.

The only thing they have is some raw data files / graphics / sounds maybe. And a very early alpha/beta of the client. Just based on how much SOE changes the EQ client, I'm guessing the final client on release will be 180 degrees turnaround from the client that was leaked already.

Well they got an alpha client version and can run it. Nothing special.

Interesting will be what they can do with this client version in the game. Because everything they can do with this 'client' version is stuff you can manipulate in the game then because it is clientbased and not serverbased.

Will be interesting because you can find out then how good blizzardsserver will be at the end. If they let a lot of stuff get controled from the client without a servercheck WoW will be a big flop because you will have cheater everywhere.

Btw. a warning to the people which think that is great and they need to download it. Noone have a control over what is behind this file then the one which put it on the server. You never know what this file do. It can be harmless or not. Allways make sure you know how to restore your system fast when you download such stuff or make sure you are smarter then the one which created the files.

I will try and get it. What i will do after i get it? No idea, but i'm sick of always being behind the pack when crap like this happens. It's not like 1.5 gigs of space is going to kill me anyways. Even if they EMU it and let you walk around zones or play with character creation. At least it's something. If nothing happens, then oh well, nothing lost nothing gained. When the game comes out i'm still going to buy it so it's not like blizzard is going to loose money if people get to walk around zones or look at pictures or whatever.

I went and read several of the linked and cross linked hack sites on this subject and really these idiots have no clue.

These people actually believe that they have the means to play World of Warcraft because they have some early alpha version of the client. They seem to think this is Diablo 3 or Warcraft 4 and not a server-side game that they now have some preliminary art for.

Well I think something like this is a hot topic because it could well have been more important parts, like the source code , the server code/server exec.

It was probably easier to get the client of course, but like we saw with HL2, it is very possible to go with a complex hack that can succeed. This would have mean other delays and more hacks and problems at the release.

Maybe they didn't came close and the client got leaked via a friend of a friend of a friend (the story linked was blank to me, any info like that?) that had the cd or maybe they did came close and got lucky only that came out.

It's much more likely a good hacker will successfully get into a system then it is likely a pretty big team a dev can protect itself against one. I would assume that the limited number of competent hacker have other shit to do and it's probably better that way.

if it's just a login and some models or some shit, why worry. You might just end up with EQ2 or gates of discovrd or some shit having some things that look suspiciously like the leaked stuff of an uberearly WoW leak..

if anything it's probably good. A relatively minor leak that'll send a spur up their ass and try to haxxor-proof hardcore from now on. Could even benefit a gold release of the game, if they knew a bunch of l33t dewdz would be trying every hour to load up Diablo hacks into the game.
