Will You Cancel Your Everquest Account (POLL - Read More)

Let's for a minute assume that the World of Warcraft is everything you've wanted and more in a game. It recaptures that feeling that you've longed after for years. It caters to both the solo artist and the group player. It has the raid content for later in the life of the game. Let's just say it has it all.

The question then is simple. Will you cancel your Everquest account?

Re-read what I just wrote. This isn't a 'will you just not play Everquest,' question. This is a 'WILL you actively log in, go to the account options, and press cancel.'

I've studied and profiled the online gaming community for years and certain things seem to never change. I guess you could just call this a personal quandary.

Feel free to comment in this thread. You guys know me, I don't mind the bad words flying, but if I see some direct 'fuck you' to someone for no reason, I will take action against you. Try to keep your internet ego in check.

EDIT: Be honest. It's an anonymous Poll - the only person you'll be lying to will be yourself.

If I had one, I would cancel it the first day WoW was released.

Why? Mostly because you can't play 2 of these games and actively compete in both of them at the same time.

The only problem is, there have been SOOO many games that were all supposedly going to be "the downfall of EQ," people will play them for a week or two, and then just go straight back to EQ.

WoW is going to be all, or nothing, imo.

I think you are missing the underlying thought behind the post. The fact of the matter is, $13.00 a month is really nothing. Double that and let's just make it $30.00 a month for cheap entertainment. The act of actually cancelling your EQ account then becomes a little more challenging. Especially to those that have been playing for so many years and have put so much of their lives in said game. What it means is, 'Has the EQ development cycle disillusioned you enough to finally say, 'I don't care if they are charging me 5 bucks a month - it's a matter of principle. I want an OUT.'

Oh I can understand that.

I mean, I went bowling the other day. You know how much that costs here? At least $10 a game, PER PERSON.

If WoW is everything you want in a game, I don't see why anyone would really stick with EQ at all. After all the bull we have put up with for 5 years?

I'm sure there will be exceptions. Not everyone feels they are getting ripped off. But if something 10x better comes along, why would you keep supporting SoE?

Edit : And since you've studied the online community, I'm sure you know that at least 50% of the people who vote YES right now will not cancel their accounts when WoW comes out. Honestly, most of us are more words then action.

If WoW has everything I want in a game, there should be absolutely no reason to keep an EQ account. Many people would argue that the time invested in an EQ character is enough of a reason to keep it active. Those people need to learn to let it go. EQ is a game, none of the loots are anything more than a pixil on your computer. And staying in contact with your online friends is free with email. So to answer your question yes, I would cancel my account and delete the game.

How about an

Option for "I will go if my friends go" ?.

Really that's what holds many in the game still, the long lasting friendships that have formed from playing together with the same people for 4+ years.

As for myself the above applies. Some of us went to DAoC for a few months then ended up returning to eq, same with anarchy online, etc, etc. I will go where my friends go most likely. Do I only play for them? No, eq still holds some fun for me. I have to say tho, that the level of enjoyment is slowly deteriorating as I progress through the game. That said EQ would be nothing without my friends, and the same with WoW. It is the community that keeps people playing for the long term.

Cost of the game is meaningless really, I can spend $13 buying McDonalds for two, $30 is just a pair of tickets to a 2hour movie. EQ is cheap entertainment, even when you factor in an extra account for our cleric bot setup.

It's an odd reflection on society and how widespread online gaming is becomming. Personally I have gone from a 22 year old college student playing at release to a 27 year old fiancee, and as much as my living style and personal income have changed my gaming routine really hasn't. It's not a matter of how well off you are online, no one really cares if you're joe broke playing in your basement or mr. trump in the penthouse tower. I think that is the type of thing that can draw people in, paticularly those with social deficientcies or anxieties.

I guess continuing will just go off topic, but for the record I would quit if the people I cared for did as well. I won't lie tho, pouring 4+ years of your life into something isn't as easy to leave behind as hitting "CANCELL". It's one reason why when my time in EQ is done my characters will remain who they are, and not ebay'd.

Well this was a hard poll, considering I reactivated my account recently only on the "missed friends" clause, and I wanted to PK people on Discord out of sheer boredom while at home.

So to the person who posted "50% or so will likely be just words" or something like that (not using Quote button is fun!), it's a bit imprecise I think. A lot of us, as was also said, are just "looking for an OUT." One simply hasn't come around yet, period. That's all there is to it.

So as Furor said, assuming WoW is the Be All End All(tm), I think we'll be seeing some active account cancellings just as a way of saying "ok I hate you buhbye!" (just like Mindy from Animaniacs) to some of the SoE devs, and especially the people who order them to get products out the door by day x and thus reduce the likelihood of FINISHED content.

ya...

I think I'll be one of the ones who will cancel their account, but I'll wait a month or 2 just to make sure WoW is all its cracked up to be.

However, thats not to say, the day I hit cancel is going to be a sad one. I'm sure many of you can sympathize (as mentioned above) the time and energy put into a character can make it... difficult to let go.

320+ days on my char.... not easily forgotten.

Canceled and broke cds last week becuase got pisseed off on discord. 2nd time I've cancelled, first time to destroy all cds.

So I guess I can click yes. As for the friends in EQ, I didn't say bye to anyone, I will see them in future games or possibly bump into them on a message board.

Im curious to as how you asnwered the question Furor.

You forged the way for many in EQ, could YOU click the cancel button?

Canceled account and >burned< the boxes, manuals and CD's about a year ago. I also formatted my hard drive and attempted to forget all eq related links. I will never ever play a MMORPG again.

I also call bullshit - you posted this on an EQ message board, for fuck's sake.

And as for the topic at hand, I plan to cancel my EQ account when WoW is released, but not uninstall the game, destroy my CDs, etc. even if for no other reason than nostalgia. Four years from now, I may want to log into EQ and see how everything is going. But that's pretty much it - if WoW is Jesus Christ in a video game box, I see no reason to go back and actively play Everquest.

I personally quit EQ awhile ago. I tried coming back at one point this summer, using a friend's second account (he didn't want it anymore) and remembered after just a few days why I quit in the first place.

If WoW is what we all hope its going to be (and I will be trying it) and you find yourself not playing EQ, why pay? To quote Tolkien on this one:

"One who cannot cast away a treasure at need is in fetters."

These are my feelings also, but for the sake of argument as has been said if wow is the best ever I think "most" (long time) players will bail on eq. I doubt it will be a rapid thing because of past "new" mmo games and how they have panned out, I think daoc is the only game to make any real headway vs eq and that was only for 6 months or so right when it came out. It's the longevity of wow I worry about simply because of how fast some players chew thru content and i doubt they will be churning out half assed expansions like soe has been doing to keep people satiated on filler.
