New Raid Idea: Copied from PON

Quote:
Note: I didn't read the thread, just want to get this onto paper :\

From what I have heard about the lore, this group, called "The Cursed" is either invading the new continent, or threatening to invade Norrath therefore we must go to that continent and stop them. Interesting storyline, and there are 2 very cool raid encounters that you could come up with.

Raid One: Defend the City

This raid would be generated by talking to a guy in a city near the ocean....say.....Qeynos, or Freeport. You would talk to the certain quest mob (maybe even collect components from the new continent in keeping with previous SoE actions :P) to initiate the raid. The story would be that a small army of "The Cursed" has been dispatched to take control of a city in order to allow the rest of the Cursed to arrive safely.

Now, let's say it is West Freeport. When the event begins, the entire city despawns (all civilians fled to the sewers/Faydwer to get away from the cursed). Freeport Milita Guards will spawn on the top of the walls near the gate (the evil races, Paladins and Militia put their differences aside).

First, before the mobs spawn, and NPC will cast a zonewide spell could "Blade Cleave." If there aren't any buff slots available, it will overwrite one. It will not able to be clicked off either. The spell will add a proc that is a small, 200-300 damage AE. The range of the AE will be very small. Essentially, it is simulation someone taking a violent circular swing (a la the Beserkers in LOTR: TTT) and hitting everyone within a small radius.

Once everyone is hit with Blade Cleave, the event will begin. Around 20 or so Archer mobs will spawn. They will be firing volleys of arrows at the wall. They could code it so that each arrow is a VERY, VERY small AE on top of the wall. Basically, the archer doesn't have a specific target, he is just firing arrows up to the wall.

Next, catapults should spawn. Catapults would act very much like archers, except the AE range of the catapult fire would be much larger. The range of the catapult will be randomized, so that it could hit the crew not on the wall, or the crew on the well.

After the catapults, the infantry attack should begin (Note: 80-90% of the mobs should be un-mezzable). The power of the average mob should be of an average to above average 65 Warrior, so that 1 person from the raid could, not well, but be able to solo 1 of these mobs. After all those mobs spawn, around 8-9 ladders should spawn. The latters will initially be untargetable. The minute they spawn on top of the wall, 3-4 average guys should spawn and start attacking. Then, every 20 seconds or so, more guys should come. Eventually, after 1-2 more rounds of guys coming, the latter should become targetable and be able to be attacked and killed, or "Kicked Down".

Note: They should randomize the ladders so that occasionally they will be targetable right from the moment they appear.

This ladder, archer, and catapult attack should last for 20-30 minutes. Then, some of the infantry will "break through the gates." Basically, the area leading out from the city to the newbie garden (which was initially blocked) will be open for either side to go through.

Anyway, once the gate is broken, 30-40 mobs, a little tougher than the ones on the walls should spawn and start attacking. Before they reach the players, the Freeport Militia Archers would launch a volley of arrows into the mobs, killing at least at least 10. Then the remaining mobs would charge the players.

Note: Once the gate is broken, every 30-40 seconds, mobs should appear at the gate to attack.

Eventually, after an hour to an hour and a half of fighting, the obligatory boss-mob should make an appearance. (Another Note: Before the boss mob appears, a "stray" catapult shot would hit the wall just right, knocking everyone to the ground near the gate, where the boss mob, and the “remaining soldiers” will be).

The boss guy would be harsh – have him cast an AE cripple (can be cured, but make it tougher than 1 shot of RC), the occasional AE mana-drain. As well, have him flurry and AE ramp – although this guy has the mana-drain, he should be a badass melee’r.

Once the boss mob is down, the raid should be able to plunder the wagons of treasure/loot that the enemies brought. You would be only able to select say 4-5 pieces of the loot before, due to the warlord’s greed, a trap was set that blew up the chest and all remaining pieces of loot. Effectively, this prevents class only/useless items from rotting.

Sorry for the long post, just been thinking about this for a while :P.

Pretty interesting idea if ya ask me - it also seems doable coding-wise, although there are so many chances where lazy, SoE scripting could fubar the event.

Actually............it doesn't.

When do you defend walls? When are their catapults? When are there Archers firing at you in the 10th ring war? The ONLY thing that is similar between this and the 10th ringwar is that a city is being defended. The battle is totally different.

Edit: Removed dickheadish comments

Aside from the giants that chuck spears at you? What about the droves of mobs that spawn and come barreling towards Thurgadin (the city). Also the fact that the even lasts several hours. Boss mobs spawning at the end? Thats in the 10th ring war too! Entire zone despawning? Ragu? Its in there!

Honestly, the only difference in what you describe is the fact that we've substituted some of the mobs with ladders and catapults.

Don't get me wrong, It sounds like a cool event, and I'd prolly even give it a try, but for the most part it's been done in the 10th ring war.

Yeah, pretty much. Now that I look at it, it really is :P.

Thug, I suppose your right, just one question though - when were mobs hurling spears at you? I remember spearmen guarding the path to the other part of the zone, but nothing about spear hurlers :P.

I write (after Thug replied to me saying that it didn't resemble the 10th Ring War):

Come on,

I'm sure you can come up with an argument that doesn't revolve around spelling issues. It sounds like a fun battle. A lot more fun than the 10th ring war, at least.

If you get close and aggro the spearmen, they'll attack you and hurl spears at you if you're beyond melee range of them.

Freeport's a poor example. WFP and EFP are both way too small, flat and bland to make this interesting. Fellwithe is great. Kaladim is great. Oggrok's not bad, innothule's very good (the swamps are good). But, truth be told, the absolute BEST place to do this would be Wakening Lands, provided you establish some fort-type setting like the giants have. WL is the best because you could have 2 separate defend scripts. Hell, if EQ was any good at PVP/guild vs. guild, WL would be great, have 1 guild + dragons invading 1 guild + giants.

Woo!

Newlevelonehumanwarrior shouts, 'one more dead snake and i'll be level 2!'
[New warrior runs through the West Freeport entrance towards the newbie zone.]
Bigbadfightboss shouts, 'Surely you did not think you could hope to keep The Cursed out! Your city shall be squashed, just as you were, Newbielevelonehumanwarrio!!'
Newlevelonehumanwarrior has been slain by TheCursedFootSoldier_01!
LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...
Newlevelonehumanwarrior has been slain by TheCursedArcher_03!
LOADING, PLEASE WAIT....

Yeah, they could add more newbie monsters somewhere (also keep in mind that the newbie bind point is out in the newbie yard), but the thought of a death loop for some poor new person is just too precious a memory to let pass.

Heck, I think I'd start this war just so I could enjoy the fun. Am I evil?
