first(?) corporate sponsorship for a massively multiplayer game guild

This sorta ties into the whole virtual property thing and adds a whole new level of weirdness

What are the benefits of this sponsorship? It doesn't seem too clear.

Anyway, I will fully allow my Tauren in WoW to have a nike swoosh on his back for a free pair of sneakers.

The whole idea behind sponsorship is to make money for your sponser through advertising etc...

So what are these guys gonna do, run around /shout "Buy More Spam!"

I bought a system from Thunderbox PC (the sponsor) last spring, and it's been fantastic. A superior system with personal support around the clock.

I remember pking The Syndicate members on UO Atlantic 6 years ago. They were a bunch of ae-inviting noobs that put the worst zerg guilds of EverQuest to shame. This makes me "lol" as I reminisce.

well the obvious ideas at "branding" would be to have Thunderbox pay for their website and have an ad there on every page.

In game the characters could be required to put "sponsered by thunderbox" in there inspect messages.

Going further, they could have some sort of guild sponsered in game contest where the winner would get a thunderbox system, altho Sony would prob slam that.

It's an interesting idea, and in being a sponser they play into the whole idea that virtual property (in this case the guild itself and the characters in it) has a real world value. It also pushes the limits on the idea of who owns what in game.

Don't you generally get a sponsor if you are well known, or do something worth mentioning that breaks new ground or something along those lines?

All I've heard about this guild is how much they sucked in UO, suck in EQ and spam all sorts of boards with their new sponsorship.

Sounds like the only thing that is getting them any publicity worth "sponsoring" is the fact that they are being sponsored.

My guess

Guy who owns the company or is in marketing at the company is in the guild or wanted in. The discount is even pretty minor, but it's something.

Also, I find the claim of first MMORPG sponsor highly suspect given the popularity of the type in Korea.

I find that anytime a guild advertises itself as "mature," they invariably suck ass.

I have a few friends that play counter-strike, and have their clans sponsored. The sponsor pays for hotel rooms and airfare to tournaments, and some of the more generous sponsors even supply free computers and/or hardware. I even know of one clan that gets payed a salary ($1200/each a month or something like that).

In return, they wear shirts with their sponsors logo at tournaments, put a little blurb in their IRC topic line, and I think that is about it. It's becoming more and more common, too. Back when I played at that level, there weren't any sponsored clans. Now, all of the ones in the big leagues are sponsored. Since it's getting more popular, I'm assuming it works.

I don't know how it would work for everquest. Maybe a link on your guild page?
