Let us make the game better.

There is a lot of rush going into EQ. It seems each expansion has been more hurried than the last and we have a ton of easy to fix graphical problems that will never see a moments attention from the developers due to time constraints.

Vah shir running animations for example are horrible. So are iksar models with luclin graphics. Lots of items need unique graphics. Why not put the character files up on a web page, allow users to download them and put their skills to work, upload the final revision, and have other users vote on which they like best. Then a project supervisor could review popular item graphic & model updates and consider them for inclusion to the game.

This would be a win win situation. We get superior art, and SOE can use current staff to work on other things.

This could be taken a step further and the devs could put together a cheap zone explorer and zone dev kit and allow users to design zones and monsters for free monthly addons to the game. Joe User who understands why players loved guk and mistmoore can spend his weekends putting together a really sweet dungeon and design unique character models for monsters in it. It is submitted to the site, users download it, preview it with the zone explorer, and rate it. Once a month a project coordinator looks at the top rated zones, itemizes a few, and throws them in for new places to experience.

It wouldn't cost SOE hardly anything except bandwidth, and would give us new places to grind levels on our twinks or AA on our mains. It would add quite a bit to the average character's life span.

Thoughts, comments?

Ooh you said someone at SOE looks it over. NM my first paragraph...

People with the skill and equipment to do stuff like new non-suck models from scratch, or new item graphics/pictures, or wholly new areas wouldn't work for free. SOE probably wouldn't allow them to either (heck, some of the Baldur's Gate modders have had problems with Interplay over modules they've done.) I think it makes a legal mess of things...

Even I made an area with a quest that was virtually impossible to solve unless I told you (or you were astoundingly perceptive to tiny extra descriptions I hid across a few room #s.) It's kind of an impulse when making MUD areas...muhahaha. Power corrupts! *hides superdoubledog secret sploits*

I disagree about talented players not wanting to work for free. Look at the fine UIs that have been made. Some of these have taken quite a big deal of work to put together, and yet there are hundreds of UIs.

As far as unfair quests/item drops, itemization and quests would be up to existing dev staff. Quests would probably be better off in SoE produced zones. Player made zones would be just for exping. They would exist as a fresh place to grind and take away some of the tedium of killing thousands of the same mob over and over.

The extent to which SoE will use player driven input for the game will be reading message boards like these, which include requests for bug fixes and new feature ideas. SoE do not like to interact with the gaming community, especially on development issues.

OMG you have got to be kidding??? There are literally hundreds of user made maps and mods for UT, CS, Q3, etc... that have WAY better looking levels than any seen in EQ, and WAY better models than anything seen in EQ.

This is a damn good idea. Not only does SOE get some free content, EQ players get more places to visit in the game, and future wannabe game designers get something to put on their resume.

I'm with what Froofy said.... jesus christ look at the FPS communities. Half-Life, Quake 2/3, Unreal.... all have incredible mods with graphics exponentially better than anything found in EQ. Why? Because people know what they want, and they spend lots and lots of time creating perfection.
