I think that's kind of the point, though - his kingship is in severe decline, as the divine mandate that vaulted him to power and let him forge his nation has expired. While the preacher made it official, it seems like the first few minutes (two years before the rest of the episode) marked the pinnacle of his reign, and he knows that it's time for new blood. The dynamic between the outgoing king and the incoming king should ultimately drive most of the drama on the show.

Maybe I missed something but why are people saying its based on the US at all? The impression I got was that it was a complete fictional country.

the king's guards looked like they were wearing marine dress uniform and the captain's insignia is the silver bars usually seen on american military. also that they are speaking american english.

While the capital of Shiloh looks like New York, the show gave the impression that Shiloh was much smaller than USA. The fact that they struggle, over a valley(akin to the Israel/Syria or Israel/Lyban conflict), against the country of Gath(who are they supposed to be? Canada? Mexico?), suggests that Shiloh has nowhere near the economic/military power of the USA we know.

My guess it is going to be on the east coast like NC/VA to NY if they are in North America or they could be in Israel and that area. They should have did a little history lesson in the beginning.

I watched it, it doesn't completely suck. The whole Crossgen thing is a little heavy handed. The NBC marketing department, as a whole, should be set on fire for the opportunity they are missing with this show.

I'm not investing in this. If I get to watch it, great. If not, it will probably be cancelled anyway. Hooplehead cocksuckers.

He said his company was fighting only a few hours away from the capital city. I'm thinking these kingdoms are very, very small compared to what we're used to. Some of them might not be monarchies.

Yeah, it seems to be US culturally but roughly analogous to Israel economically and geographically (with an inferior military no less). It has promise but I'm not sure why they didn't embrace the David mythology consistently throughout the show. I guess to have more twists and turns but it was odd how closely they would parallel the story only to veer off strangely a second later.

I thought they made it clear that, even if it takes place in North America, we aren't dealing with countries with the dimensions and size of the US or Canada, but rather the (by modern standards) dinky kingdoms of the historical middle east.

Didn't the king flat out mention that the new capital was built after the combination of 3 previous countries in the Unification Wars (that David's dad got whacked in)? And yet they are still close enough to the Gath border that it's only a couple hour flight there?

I'd estimate that the subcountries are only on the scale of Pennsylvania.

Ian McShane was on the daily show, he said they just finished the last/13th show. Couple of places reported that it was supposed to only have been a 13 show mini series to start with, so i think they will show the whole run atlest somewhere if rating don;t get any better,

Shows have been canceled before their shot runs were complete, then they end up airing the rest of them on channels like Universal HD or another channel will get the rights to air it for their filler programming. I think having a better replacement is probably more important than letting a floundering show complete it's run as it sheds viewers every week.

NBC ordered 13 hours of Kings; that's not a mini-series, that's a short season.

Whether all of them will air on NBC is the question. The per episode cost was something like $4 mil - that's on the higher end of the scale, and makes it more likely that all the episodes will air. (It's not like they will recoup the $44 mil in unaired episodes if they pull it today and only release it on DVD.) Especially since NBC had some weird sponsorship deal with some insurance company on the show - the Insurance Co. will want all their ads aired.

Well, given that it is based on the story of King David, they would obviously run out of material pretty fast, at the rate they're going.

Is there anything else NBC would air on a sunday? Reality tv reruns?

Semi related. Do sites like Hulu get counted when looking at a shows ratings? I imagine millions of people catch these shows on Hulu instead of watching it during its time slot. I watch most of my tv shows through hulu now and was wondering today if that is just adding to the problem.
