The Mentalist

"The Mentalist" (2008)

I wasn't able to give this show 100% of my attention but it's almost a direct rip of Psych, right down to how self centered the main character can be, but with a more serious overtone of the main guy helping a Serious Crimes Unit track down a serial killer in between solving weekly crimes.

I like Psych because it never takes itself too seriously but this show might wear thin on me real fast. Not sure if either this or Fringe is worth my Tuesday 8pm time slot.

I caught parts of this while also trying to watch Fringe.

The problem with this show is that it is taking an ability(Perception) and trying to make an entire character from it. This would seem to be an ok idea but this kind of character already exists in the law enforcment format. The show is called "Criminal Minds".

I think they started at the wrong timeline. It might have been a little more interesting to start him doing his "I talk to dead people" routine and some how tying that into his family being targeted for death because he upset some psycho who happened to be in the audience.

Then you get him having to prove his value to law enforcement agents, and thereby introducing him to the viewers.

While it is interesting that an exconartist has turned to good because his family was killed by a serial killer, it is a story they should have left for a few more down the road. They explained the main character way to fast. I just do not see this show lasting very long with all of the other cop/detective shows that exist.

I liked the first episode but the second one was fairly dumb, as well as redundant at the end. Is every episode going to end up with the rest of the agents thinking he's full of shit so they wander off leaving him to confront the Bad People alone and unarmed, only to be miraculously saved by the timely return of one of the others?

I take back the above, the show has evolved into something unexpected. Instead of solving crimes by testing fibers and finding that one tear for a DNA match he reads people. They moved away from the high tech computers and the picture filters that can get a perfect face match from the reflection off sun glasses.

They made the women pretty but not like they are always ready for a photo shoot. The main guy really grew on me and I hope it continues to stay on the air.
