SciFi is retarded. I mean, look how horrible Lost's ratings are, and they are totally dependant on 1-shot stories.

This series will be terrible and I'll watch it because of the lack of SciFi. More to the point SG1 was enjoyable to me because of the interaction between the characters and that is where at Atlantis failed for me. I really liked watching Jack, Daniel, Mitchel, and Vala and the verbal sparing or just one liners that would typically ensue. Atlantis had it to a certain extent with Rodney and Sheppard, but it wasn't as well delivered.

They do have a point, however. Serialized Dramas don't always do that well unless they do great in the beginning or generate a large amount of buzz.

They have a barrier of entry that most people won't deal with when they can just watch something else. People on this board are the kind of people who will see a new show being talked about here and download the episodes on torrents or watch them on NBC.com or whatever.

Joe shmoe at home will just change the channel if he turns the show on in week six and has no idea what's going on.

Thats why most dramas have mostly one shot episodes with like 5 minutes devoted to some season long arc and a show like once a month that ties into that arc.

Fox just showed the Bones season finale, so thats a good example, most of the season was stand alones, but a few episodes from premier to finale dealt with the "Gormagon" case. It was occasionally mentioned in stand alone cases, but only a few episodes were truely devoted to it.

In the same genre, Star Trek:TNG was pretty much all stand alones, moving from mission to mission. Sometimes a previous adventure was referenced, but not enough to prevent enjoyment if you didn't see that ep.

The characters grow together, but the barrier of entry to the average viewer isnt there. More potential for ratings increase.

Of course DS9 was highly serialized in the later seasons and I loved that as well.

Sci-Fi just wants stand-alones because they are easier to syndicate/show at odd hours.

However, unless a stand-alone episode is really good, I tend to enjoy the serialized stuff alot more.

If the ship can't be controlled, how can any real adventure take place? If they beam down to a planet, the ship could then say "fuck this - I'm outta here," and leave the crew on the planet.

I'm sure they will come up with something stupid like the ship orbits each planet for 36 hours before moving on. But then, why would an unmanned ship need to do that?

The ship will only spend a limited amount of time in each galaxy before moving on to the next. They would have access to the local gate system but not intergalactic systems, meaning a) no travel back to the Milky Way and b) if the ship leaves for the next galaxy when people aren't on it, they're stranded.

I would guess that the time factor will be limited to a recharge of the jump engines or something similar.

It just seems like Star Trek with more limitations to me. If I see one more "alien" with ridges on their noses, I may just have to choke a bitch.

I never really watched any of the stargate shows except a few here or there, is the series really worth downloading and watching? I recently downloaded and I'm almost done watching through Season 3 of BSG, looking for other shows to catch up on but don't know if watchin SG:SG1 and SG:A is a waste of time or not.

SG-1: Absolutely. If, after finishing that series, you find yourself craving more, then download and watch Atlantis.

Fixed. Fuck SG:A. When they kill Tayla and Wier and manage to not bring them back to life in some retarded fucking way ever then maybe it will stop being painful to watch.

Edit: Genocide Tayla's ass backwards fucking retarded "people" too please.

That is the best episode of Stargate. Ever.

It is also quite possibly one of the best television episodes for any show. The number of inside jokes and self-mockery was incredible. And hilarious.

Watching episodes 1 - 199 and then watching 200 is like eating a delicious box of cereal and finding an awesome toy at the bottom.

Learn Who Plays The Lead In SciFi’s STARGATE: UNIVERSE!! -- Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news.

Quote:
Robert Carlyle (“Trainspotting,” “The Full Monty”), last seen helping Jack Bauer herd African children to safety, will star as Dr. David Rush in “Stargate: Universe,” SciFi’s looming spinoff.

The other regulars are expected to be played by less famous actors.

The Hollywood Reporter describes the premise:

Described as edgier, darker and younger-skewing than its predecessors, "SGU" follows a group of soldiers, scientists and civilians left to fend for themselves when forced through a Stargate after their hidden base comes under attack. The survivors, who emerge aboard an ancient ship missing in the far reaches of space, are led by Dr. David Rush (Carlyle), who works to unlock the ship's mysteries and return the group home but also might have ulterior motives.

Find all of the Reporter’s story on the matter here.
Good choice with Carlyle, in my opinion. Rather like him.
