that doesnt look too bad actually. in the book i think jack was a bit younger which would explain why he acts so... naive, if thats the right word. I dont know though its been a really long time since i read that book.

none of that was in the book, what happens was he dreamed about his mother being pushed in a car. he never followed his mother into the shower he did go and wake her up and she was still on the bed, he was scared when she didnt answer him. he also does look for her and doesnt find her anywhere until he goes downstairs and sees her in a cafe. no drama like in that clip, but itr was nice seeing someone trying to get the ball rolling.
