Stargate : Continuum

Great movie imo, much better then the first one, which was really just a glorified series finale.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Biggest disappointment was the ending, which was always going to happen in a time travel story but negated a lot of the impact of what happened to the various characters. Good side is that it was a by the book execution of what people should do in that situation! No monologuing crap, put a bullet in his head and fix everything!

Good to see Macguyver and Hammond back, especially Hammond, but thought their roles were too small.

I wonder if they are going to do more SG-1 flicks.

Although I hear this season of Atlantis will be pretty cameo heavy.

I read where they will only be able to do two things at once: Atlantis / new series / SG-1 flicks -- so one of those will be dropped.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Atlantis will be canceled this coming season. It's ratings have been falling hard the past couple of years. Although I doubt a new series will fare any better.

Anyway, Continuum was totally kick ass and actually felt like a theatrical movie. 2-1/2 thumbs up! I plan on buying the DVD when it's released to show my support.

I dunno...I think they might stick it out with Atlantis. A new series seems like a bigger risk then a known success (sg1) and a series that's easy to introduce cross-over (Atlantis).

I wonder how much lower are ratings are negating from what I assume would be above average DVD and merchandise sales.

I've only ever watched Stargate SG1 on and off and even that was in it's early years. I did see the amusing anniversary show with the puppets etc but that's probably the only one from the last few seasons. Just saying that to frame the comments following :

I just watched this and was highly entertained, can't recommend it enough to not only the regular Stargate crowd but pretty much anyone who has only seen a few episodes here and there or probably even just the film. It seemed they had a decent budget as the fx were better than i expected and i was even pleasantly surprised by the storyline not being as by the numbers as normal. If this was the last piece of Stargate it would have been a good ending to it's overall run. Sadly it will probably sell well enough for them to end up doing another at some point and piss away all the goodwill

Would any recommend me sitting through its entire run if I can get hold of them though? Was it overall entertaining enough for me to sit through 10 or was it 11 seasons of episodes or should I just be thankful i enjoyed this movie and leave it at that?

No, you should definitely watch at least seasons 1-4. They were consistently good, in my humble opinion.

What is the budget like on this?

I've been watching the later seasons of SG1 recently, started with a episode where they save Jonas' planet from blowing up and replicarter wassoon after... currently up to the first season of Ori stuff.

Very dissappointed as the majority of the episodes are on base with 'alternate story concepts' or on a generic canadian forest planet, complete with massive anticlimaxes just to make it that much more shitty.
Hell they even had that episode with the hairdresser with oneil's memories who blatantly pointed out all the shows flaws.

So yeah, real low budget stuff... do the movies suffer from the same thing?

The DVD movies do have million dollar budgets, but they are nowhere near the original movie (~50 million) or the cost for modern movies. They're comparable to double length episodes with more money to spend on CGI.

Seasons 1-8 are what any fan should watch, 9-10 take with a grain of salt.

That was a special episode with the guy who does the voices of homer in the simpsons, special cameo.

I love stargate, probably my favorite tv series of all time, i agree with whats been said above though, 1-8 are a definate watch, 9-10 are entertaining but not as good as the others.

Continuum was alot better than the ark of truth though.

It's out and about if you know where to look.

The biggest problem with the early seasons of Stargate is the repeating of enemies. No matter how often they beat them, and killed them, they still found a way to bring them back.

of course they make fun of this a few times in the later seasons.

Just saw Continuum, loved it, definitely worth watching for any sci-fi geek. They keep the pace moving along nicely and the story flows along believably, unlike most time travel stories. Way, way better than the last movie. Was wicked cool seeing all the people from the first few seasons, like the goauld and RDA.

Only thing I was confused about:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
So Cameron goes back to 1929, waits 10 years, gets on the boat, then kills Bhaal (nice shot!). I guess he never then contacts the US military because he doesn't want to mess up the timeline? Woulda been nice to warn them about some shit, like don't go to planet X or hey don't send anyone to the Orii galaxy. Oh well, guess he didn't wanna fuck up the future. Still, it does mean that all of Bhaals satellites are around all the suns, so anyone with that idea can make another time machine. minor nit, they did a good job making sure the time travel stuff was kept simple.

Really loved how Bhaal was basically using his knowledge to exploit people - promise Jaffa freedom, come to Earth in friendship, etc. Smartest evil time travel villain, ever.

Few points about the movie:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The writers really did make a believable story, using the satellites and the Stargate glitch was much better than stumbling across another cache of Ancient tech or somehow building his own.

They did leave a lot open, because they didn't show any specifics about Ba'al's plan except for the 1939 ship attack and the 2009 arrival at Earth. Qetesh's comment that Ba'al never left her side for the past 15 years is a big hint that Ba'al produced more clones. Whether or not that happened prior to 1939 and Mitchell shooting (one of) him is left blank.

I'd bet that the clones were made first, and the satellites weren't recreated in the past until the 1939-2009 period. This would leave Ba'al still alive but history intact

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
I figured that the original Ba'al was never captured and simply went through time. He took care of the gate and went back to his world (not time period) to establish his power. Remember Ba'al apparently took out the transmitter for tracking, out of himself since the original one can do that. Also there was no evidence that the time thingy could work in reverse. In the past the time machine might not be ready yet.
