+19 Internets | Protection... PeerGuardian 2, etc So I've now been busted twice now by Comcast for downloading copyright whatever. Worst part it was shit that was last resort of entertainment (apprentice and the movie "next"). I used to have roadrunner and it was never an issue, but now that comcast has taken over I've got two of these in the last 3 weeks. I keep peerguardian 2 up the whole time, but I guess that doesn't really do the trick. I mean I'm not going to stop downloading shit so don't suggest that as a "solution". Though does anyone know what else I can be doing so I don't possibly maybe one day get suspended and have to move to DSL |

| Nothing really. You will get C&D's if you download TV shows and movies from torrents. They have people working for them with access to pretty much everything out there, and PG can't stop them effectively. Get a usenet account if you want to save your cable. I use an Easynews account for when I'm feeling lazy to download autounrar'ed videos, but what I normally do is use their global search + NZB generator to download stuff from my Roadrunner news server with Newsleecher. Not sure how Comcast compares but RR is now about 30-40 days retention and 99+% complete. Last edited by Vorph : 08-11-2007 at 04:58 PM. |

+38 Internets | If your ISP doesn't host a useful newsgroup there's always the option of signing up for a premium one. $15/month buys you unlimited downloading from NewsHosting and the real retention is higher than what they advertise. (seems to be about the same as the $20 extended retention account - don't ask me why) |

| They only get you for seeding the files once you're done downloading. I've got C&D's from Comcast twice, once for an ep of Entourage, and once for John Tucker Must Die (I'm ashamed to admit DL'ing that) Just be careful about seeding movies especially off public torrents. Private ones are much safer, much less likely person on other end DL'ing is working for a Corp. and writing down your IP to send to your ISP. And even if they do, as long as you stop seeding it, they won't hassle you anymore. If Comcast or another ISP seriously went after the people using torrents they would lose a shit ton of customers. Edit: The ISP's won't suspend you. C&D's are them doing the bare minimum so they aren't held liable. They don't give a shit about copyright they just don't want to be sued.

| Typically the C&Ds are just a quick scan of active torrents for recent content. They collect all visible IPs in the swarm, whether you actually send them any data or not, and track them back to the internet provider. For the ones in the US, they send C&Ds with the IP. Protowall and Peerguardian may prevent you from sending/recieving any data packets from the snooping bastards, but they can still see your IP is connected to the tracker. For videos they're not too focused on hard evidence, just at harassing you and your ISPs. Music on the other hand... they'll cut you and take your children, then they'll abuse the children and whore them out for Superbowl comercials.

| I use PG2, and have had zero problems. I have done more than my share of downloading (many people come to my house and are shocked at the volumes of dl'd stuff). One thing I do not do is seed, since the companies seem to go after seeders first. I'd love to share, but with the crackdown, my Utorrent shuts off seconds after the download is done.

| You'll have to pay for it, but usenet is the way to go if you want to be safe. It also has the added benefit of being a lot faster than torrents. I don't download a lot of stuff, so I just pay $25 for 90 gigs at news.astraweb.com - Usenet News Server - Unlimited Downloads - $10/month. I don't claim Astraweb is the cheapest, (it was the cheapest I found years ago, I dunno what is the cheapest) but I've had no problems with it. They have unlimited plans as well. If you are really paranoid, go with Newsgroups: Giganews USENET News Servers and get an encrypted account. Giganews is the premium usenet provider. NewsBin NNTP Usenet Binary Newsgroup Robot is the newsreader I use. Binsearch -- Usenet search engine Newzbin - Usenet Search are the search engines to use. |

| Comcast is known for being fucking shitheads when it comes to P2P. The only way to maybe get past them is with a bittorrent program that supports encryption both ways.

| Yeah I use Giganews with encryption and Newsleecher as my program and Newzbin as my search engine. It's the cats pajamas. Especially with the Giganews accelerator for when I want to optimize speeds or download headers. |

+5 Internets | Out of curiosity, is this a problem specific to the US? I live in Toronto and have things downloading pretty much 24/7. TV shows, movies, music whatever. From public torrent sites(namely isohunt if it makes a difference). I've never heard anything from my ISP, Rogers. I usually seed too. |
