Mobile Suit Gundam 00

The short and sweet:

First episode aired yesterday; subs are already out. Easy to find with a quick google search; 5-6 groups are competing to sub this one. This is the first full Gundam TV Show since 2004-2005s Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny.

Looks good and watched the first episode; can't say much about it so far.

The characters looks great. We'll see how it goes for the next episode.

Still in my download queue on my shitty 144k IDSL. Looking forward to it - this is a pretty big and awesome fall season.

I've watched the first eps of Kaiji, Dragonaut, Myself;Yourself, and Da Capo 2 so far.

Have the first eps of Gundam 00, Blue Drop, and Ninomiya queued up after I get Hayate ep 27 finished.

Same here. I actually looked forward to Kaiji, as I was a fairly big fan of Akagi.

The animation turned me off at first, but the story and drama of it all was good enough to warrant me to continue watching it all the way to the end.

The animation of Kaiji actually drew me in. I love how stylized it is - it's pretty neat.

Oh woops, speaking of Fall 07 shows still, I forgot the most important one:

Clannad.

Definitely my pick for my favorite out of the Fall 07 line up. The first ep was gorgeous and totally up there with its predecessor Kannon 06 in quality.

First episode was good but was definitely more subdued than say, the first episodes of both Seed series. The action was used to drive the point of the speech (exposition) home.

I found a lot of it interesting tho, the designs seem a little more functional this time around (space suits of the crew are a bit bulky, don't look like they come from the nearest Tommy store for example). Space elevators make more sense than mega launch ramps, etc.

Plus, no burning Emo rage yet, the Gundam Meisters have their personalities but come across as professionals.

I've watched a bit of Anime and never ever watched a Gundam show from start to finish so I figured I'd give this one a go.

The first episode was kinda cool, looking forward to a few more. They introduced a lot of characters so there could be quite a bit going on in the next few episodes, it actually has a lot of potential.

This series has alot of work cutout for it if it wants to top Gundam SEED. Even with SEED's melodramatic tendencies, it still had an awesome "overall plot" and kickass battles. Plus, it had Andy Waltfield.

Agreed.

I am prepared for Gundam 00 to be different:
  • Seed was scripted around the time when the debate on cloning and genetics manipulation was at it's strongest. It's a debate that is still raging but doesn't have the same impact as it did in the early years of this decade. When I think of Seed, I think of this snippet in one of the last episodes when you hear a man yelling at his wife for having a miscarriage since the fetus "cost" them so much and this other scene when you can hear a woman complaining her child doesn't have the hair and eye color she had selected before the pregnancy... Meanwhile...
  • Gundam 00 was scripted around the time when the debate on energy, and the wars fought around energy reserves, was/is at it's strongest. This will be the main drive of the series's overall plot. It's a good choice and a strong subject matter to script around but by it's nature I don't think it can have as much of an emotional impact as a plot centering around genetic manipulation. This is why character development is going to be critical for Gundam 00.

I'm a huge Gundam fan, spent hundreds of dollars on Gundam merchandise. From getting an entire series on DVD to those damn little models you have to build yourself (damn them!).

While it may have only been one episode, I'm pleased with it. I can't wait to see more.

* Nice comparison Ayeshala, good stuff

** Zeta Gundam was the best series!

The reason Seed's plot was as good as it was, was because it was essentially a 21st century retelling of the original Mobile Suit Gundam. The basic plot doesn't really start to even try to diverge till the second half of the series. Ramba Ral from the original series was the inspiration for Andrew Waltfeld for instance. Destiny shared a lot of similarities with Zeta but not to the extent of the first Seed to MSG. Gundam series are supposed share some common elements but what Seed did was kind of ridiculous.

I'm not saying Seed was bad (though Destiny was) though, I think it was just average. A few things bugged me about Seed, Like how Fukuda would bring back characters who so clearly died after he discovered a new use for them. Then also the excessive use of reused animation and flashbacks also really got to me. I won't even get going on Destiny which did all this and more...

So basically, I don't think Gundam 00 will have any problems surpassing Seed in greatness. It is also not like Seed and 00 are actually competing, there should be a new Seed movie in 08 sometime. Gundam 00 is being done by someone who had almost no previous knowledge of Gundam so this series should be able to differentiate itself from the other series easily.

EDIT: The best thing to come out of the Seed universe was the 45 minute ONA, C.E. 73: Stargazer. There was almost more character development than all of Destiny in that one ONA. It was a lot darker than the Seed series, almost had a UC vibe to it. Only bad thing was how short it was, it deserved a few more episodes.

It feels like a morbid mix of Wing and Seed. And damn it, going off the prerelease material, I thought that purple haired/red eyed guy was actually a girl, fucking japan.

Thats ok, it literally took me 20 episodes to realize that the green haired ZAFT pilot in SEED was a guy. Fucking japan.
