I don't think it's a "sequel," per se. It's a retelling/remake that contains some slightly different material and may have a slightly different conclusion at the end of everything. But I don't think it's going to spend any time covering events beyond the timeframe of the original series.

Rebuild is to Evangelion what Batman Begins is to Batman, essentially.

Actually, given that there are entirely new characters being introduced, I think we're about to see things diverge wildly in the next movie, if the previews can be believed. It wouldn't shock me if we see a whole new sequence of events from here on out.

i really dont know. maybe its the little anime fanboy who's having fun inside my brain, or maybe is just Anno trying to fuck with us but ....

there are 2 hints that really make you think this is some sort of sequel / retake

1) the sea is red, including the water taken from aqueducts (when misate takes her bath the water is reddish/pink), just like it is at the end of "End of Evangelion"

2) kaworu, on the moons says 2 phrases, "the third again huh?" and "i cant wait to meet you again ikari shinji"

the second phrase can be easely explain if they have meet sometime before shinji came to tokyo 3, but the first?
