Gungrave

Awesome series, made by (I believe) one of the main guys behind Trigun, and one of the guy's behind Cowboy Bebop.

(last ep up in a day or two)

I didn't like the end of the series. It's also a bit to meldramatic in some parts that drags certain sequences on more than they should have.

I really liked the series when it was early, the dynamic between the characters and thier goals, trying to go from poor inner city street punks up the ladder of organized crime.

Then...outta nowhere, fuckin zombie shit.
(I didn't know anything about the series, I wasn't expecting it).

Went all downhill into stupidity from there to me, woulda much prefered they "Kept it real" so to speak.

Heh apparently you didn't watch the first episode then, as chronologically it works like Berserk.

"Gungrave" is a fantastic series, and one of the only anime series I've ever bothered watching to completion. I agree with some previous posters, though, in that I found the human drama much more compelling than the superpowers and zombies and whatnot. It reminded me somewhat of "The Godfather," or maybe "Goodfellas." I also thought the whole non-linear storytelling aspect was pretty cool.

And for the poster who said he didn't like the series finale: I can see what you mean, but actually, I thought the final episode was one of the most powerful in the series. It really tied the whole human side of the story together nicely.

I didn't... It was on late night on G4 when I saw my first episode(which was episode #3) and I went from there.

I just think it woulda been a better series if they cut all that shit out and changed it.
They spent all that time on imho excellent character development, and then just threw it out for no apparent reason.

yeah, alot of the Grave episodes werent very strong at all, it was rather iffy till bunji and bear walken, but i cannot hate that series after watching episode 14. Nothing could destroy it after something so wonderful.

Also if you like great character development, i highly recommend monster, it "keeps it real".

I agree with Millie. There's a point around 18-23 or something that's stupid and should've been left out. The character development and interaction is some of the best I've ever seen though. I also loved the ending.

Looks interesting, I've only heard positive things about this series. Downloading now... thanks, Cheeseman.

I have to admit -- and I'll probably be assassinated by Searyx's secret anime police for saying this -- I actually prefer the English dubbing of "Gungrave" to the Japanese version with subtitles. Anime fans would consider that blasphemous, but for some reason, it's just my preference for this particular series. I think it's one of the few Japanese imports I've seen where the English voice actors actually got things right.

And let's be honest with ourselves. How much of the "subtlety" and "meaning" are you REALLY losing from a series by not hearing it in Japanese? Unless, of course, you actually speak Japanese or something. In that case, go right ahead.

I'm the same way with Cowboy Bebop, I like the voice acting in that alot.

Apart from some of the Kanji play on word/onomatapaea jokes, nothing near as much as the sub-fanatics would have you believe. Unless of course you get a really shitty English VA who'd screw up any show, Japanese or not.
