I've been watching the previews and I agree it looks very, very good. FX is the shit imo, best network on tv. What bothers me though is they show so much on the previews that I feel like I already know what's going to happen. Granted there's always more and nothing takes the place of actually seeing it unfold but when you read a book if you know the ending doesn't it take the fun out of it?

I saw the previews for the shield 2 weeks ago it showed Vic turning the tables on Cavanaugh and surprising them in the middle of a bust. That's exactly what happened during the next show and I knew it was coming. That was the episode in a nutshell... For me that kinda ruined it and I really wish they hadn't given so much away.

So here's my predictions on what happens in Thief: Andre Braugher and his crew get together to rob some people even though they are warned ahead of time it's dangerious. They pull off the job and the people they stole the money from come after them. Andre Braugher's girl gets killed by the people they stole the money from, or at least hurt real bad.

If I saw the previews again right now I could probably make 10 more assumptions about the show as well. I can understand hyping up a show but you show exciting instances within the show that are completely out of context that don't give away THE actual context very much. I think some of the "theme" should be portrayed but not so much so that the characters are stereotyped before the show even begins.

Maybe we'll get lucky and it'll go like the shield. We all knew Vic was a hardcore cop from the previews before the show started, and that's why I wanted to watch it so much. What I didn't know was that Vic was going to kill a fellow officer on his team to protect his ass. Without that 1 heinous act the shield would be 1/10th as rich. With that 1 heinous act we are all torn inside as to whether we want Vic to go down or not if we look deep, deep within ourselves. Granted, at any moment I would say hell yeah I want Vic to come out on the good side in every way if I was asked. I can't help but like Vic and hate anyone that gets in his way. I think that's just an American quality lol.

I never have time to watch T.V. when shit is on, so I guess I'm lucky that I do not get fucked over by spoiler scenes in previews. Usually, even with movies, I watch the trailer just once, then decide whether I should go see it or not. Happened with Rome, Dead Like Me, The Wire & The Shield. All winners. The only thing I still don't know about right now is the movie Night Watch.

Anyway... This will be a show I am looking foward to watching.

Ok, they just showed the first episode tonight. What a letdown after all the hype.

1- I don't like any of the charachters. They are not in the least bit likeable. They don't even act like normal people.

2- Where was the witty dialogue? Look at shows like The Sopranos or, to a lesser extent, The Shield. Those shows have interesting dialogue. This had a really boring script.

The writers of Sopranos or the Shield do their best to endear you to their charachters, and show them in real life family situations to make them seem more human. Then they go and do something that makes you dislike them. In this show, I didn't find myself liking them in their daily struggle nor in their crime sprees.

I expected alot more from this show.

The first episode of the shield you sure as fuck didn't like Vic or anyone on the strike team except for maybe Lem. They killed another cop, how could you like them if you have decent morals?

Thief seemed like it tried to start out the same way to me. They're doin bad stuff and they have real life shit going on that motivates them. Personally I think they are dead to rights within 2 episodes if this is real life. They broke like 75 of their own rules to keep them safe and out of jail in the first episode. First Izzy fucked up during the heist. Then they got all personal arguin and shit. They went back to the same place after the flights and were at Andre Braugher's shop. Then they were at his house and still more arguing until Izzy finally gets killed. The shit goes on and on. Imo, 2 episodes and any good csi/detective team would have their ass with all those fuckups.

Aside from that... I did like the show. The only characters I didn't like were Izzy and the 2nd black guy, forget his name. Sucked the wife died like that. At least she won't be dead weight for the show aka Andre will be able to move around and do whatever he wants with only a kid asking questions instead of having to hide it all from the wife...

For all the hype I thought it was a great first episode. I knew a lot of what was going to happen but watching it unfold was still interesting. I'll stick with it a few more episodes at least before I decide if I like it or not. Fx makes some good shows though. I think this one will join the ranks of the successful ones.

As for the witty dialogue lacking I thought the dialogue was ok, nothing real special. This episode seemed more visual and emotional so the dialogue wasn't needed as much, especially when half or more of the episode was given away in the previews. Personally I think that's a perfect spin on an episode where you know most of what's going to happen. I like good dialogue as well but I can't stand if it gets to the point of NYPD Blue. I could understand what was going on but it was just irritating. Mad TV did a spoof on NYPD Blue's mystery dialogue, "you know the thing you did when you did the other thing..." kind of bullshit.

Thief

The premier episode was a real let-down. I can't think of another show in recent history where the pump for the show didn't equal the squirt. And there was a lot of pump for Thief.

1. Character development. Biggest let-down of the entire first episode. Who are these people? No real backdrop, aside from the fact that "we're all thieves" (clever). I realize it was only one episode, yet just dropping all of these actors into one pot at the same time (was there any instance during the entire episode where there is only one character on-screen at one time?) was a bad choice.

2. Unlikeable characters. I can't even remember the main actor's character's name, and quite honestly didn't find him to be that good of an actor to begin with. He rolls his tongue and smacks his lips too much - I found that really fucking annoying. Izzy. Screaming not-good-at-acting dumbbitch daughter-in-law. Stale ole' Hamilton with no T2000's in sight. No Edward Furlong.

3. Boring. Little action. Little play between bank robbing and shooting Izzy. Nothing really of note stood out about the first episode aside from the fact that it seemed like a radar blip which never quite hit for more than five seconds; bleep... bleep... ble... bl... (gone).

They may have lost me on the first episode. Being as I have more time on my hands than any man should be allowed, I may just watch episode two for shits and giggles.

Ta,

I definatly didn't like it. It seems to be just another drama show that happens to be about criminals, which at least makes a nice change from another cop show I guess.

I must prefer shows like Hustle, and to a lesser extent the Heist, which are actually about the crimes being done, and how they are done, and which so far have been coupled with interesting characters.

The second episode seems to be picking up a bit, but I still fell asleep. For me, the "fall asleep" test is a sign of whether I will continue watching a show. I just don't care about the charachters one way or another. I don't like them so much I am rooting for them to get away or dislike them so much I want them to get caught.

I could care less what happens to them, good or bad. /yawn.

I typically give a series three tries to get into things. Thief is on it's last chance.

I can sum up my main complaint in regard to the show as the following: It feels more like I'm watching a show that's been on for two months rather than one that's been on for two episodes.

First off, they keep referring to things like we know what they're talking about. I realize they're trying to foreshadow future episodes or slowly give us important information overtime, but in the meanwhile, we're getting next to nothing. I don't know anything about the characters on the show. I couldn't even tell you any of their names. Two weeks into a show, I should feel something besides apathy for everyone on it. They're just all faceless at this point.

Also, I don't like how they're killing off what could've been interesting characters so fast. I mean, come on, it's been two episodes, and they've already offed what, at first glance, appeared to be three more central characters. At least let us get to know these characters before they're killed. I know they're trying to show just how bad these people are, but that really doesn't come across unless you actually give a crap about these people.

Like I said, I'll give it one more chance. It has the potential to be good, but it will never get there if they don't pick up the pace.

Done.

After episode 2, I'm done giving this a shot.

This might sound fairy, but a stripper turned me on to "Blow Out"; a show about a gay hairdressing ninny who whines about his product line and can't stop obsessing about his pretend "wife" and "kid".

And I actually know his name; 'Jonothan'.

*cough*

Point is, I can't remember the main characters' names from Thief, and it's only been four days since the second episode.

I liken this show to the following SAT equation;

Thief ---- (is to) ---- The Shield

what

Dungeons and Dragons Online ---- (is to) ---- World of Warcraft

...

You guys checked out Hustle yet?
Far superior to both Thief and the Heist.

It's a BBC show so not sure when its on in the US. Best bet might be to DL from BT or something, and get the first episode / season. The seasons are only 6 episodes each though which is a little dissappointing.

I read an article in a british magazine that said the current series has over a dozen episodes in it. Hopefully they weren't bullshitting.
