Alice in Chains

I don't recall seeing a thread dedicated to them and god knows they deserve one.

I've started listening to them again recently after finding my 3 legged dog CD, it has not left my CD player since.

In my humble opinion they are the greatest well known grundge/rock band of the early 90s; better then Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Blind Melon, ANYTHING.

I don't like writing long, drawn out reviews so i'll just say listening to "Over Now" right now brings a tear to my eye. Their music is so diverse, their talent as musicians shines thru in every song.

If you have not heard anything from them besides whats on the radio please, do yourself a favor and buy "Dirt".

Now that the lead singer is dead is anyone following projects the other band members are getting involved in? Please, post them if you know of any.

Soundgarden was superior to Alice, but Alice was right up there.

Not exactly comparable to judge if one is superior to another

They're both unique and cover different themes.

The thing with AIC is they barely got a chance to really make good music. Their first CD's were a little rough (Facelift, Sap, even Dirt a little), and their last few ones were really starting to show off their talent (Untitled, Jar of Flies). It's a huge shame that well before Layne's death the band had basically given up recording a new album because of his drug problems.

Jerry Cantrell's two solo albums are pretty good, if not great. He DID write most of the music and a good portion of the lyrics in AIC, so it's pretty similar. A little more laid back and bluesy or something though. I haven't heard much from the rest of the band, I think Mike Inez (bassist) was touring with another band or something. Whatever though, AIC was about Layne and Jerry.

AIC is easily one of the top 5 bands of the last decade. Right up there with Tool, Nirvana, Radiohead, NIN and Pearl Jam. The difference is...noone ever talks about AIC, I wonder why that is?

My favorite band of all time. Dirt is one of the most incredible albums I've ever heard. AIC utilized harmony vocals like no other band could in that era.

AIC was brilliant. I cringe when I think of all the spotlight Cobaine gets, when Staley was the truly talented one.

Staley could sing extremely well, of that there is no doubt. But I wouldn't say he was incredibly talented or anything. Don't forget that the vast majority of AIC's music, and most of the lyrics, were written by Jerry Cantrell. He deserves the lion's share of the credit for AIC.

I love Alice in Chains. I got to see them in concert once like in 1992 or something, and they were phenomenal.

My fiance and I still get sort of bummed/amost choked up when we think about the fact that Layne was dead for over two weeks before anyone even found him. What a sad way to die, and to have no people close enough to you that they would even miss you for that long. Such a talent, and so alone in the world (probably because he pushed everyone away due to his drug use and emotional roller coaster life, but still sad)!

I love everyone in my family deeply and they all hate it when I don't keep in constant contact with them, but I go weeks at a time without talking to any of them due to my schedule and distance. It isn't too far fetched to think that Layne had plenty of support around him, he just chose heroin as his support of choice and it doesn't check up on you after you die.

Loved AIC. Facelift, Sap, Dirt, Jar of Flies, Alice in Chains, Unplugged...all of it was damn good and sees time in my CD players and playlists. Cantrell's solo album was good. Mad Season rocked. Talented people for sure.

Alice in Chains is one of the greatest bands to ever exist, and i can honestly say i have heard no one near in sound to them. when staley died it was tragedy but one waiting to happen he made cobain's drug habit look like a simple dope smoker in high school so it was bound to happen. im definetly gonna be bummed that no new Chains albums will be out u just cant replace Staley he is a god.

Drummer and bassist in Mad Season were relative unknowns, as far as I could gather. The guitarist was Mike McCready (or however you spell his name) from Pearl Jam.

Sound Garden Drummer was Matt Cameron, who is now the Pearl Jam drummer. I liked Jack Irons better than Cameron, but to each their own.
