Playlist organization?

Hey all, apologies in advance if a similar thread has been posted in this section. I have not the patience of even an eight year old to sift through old posts.

Anyways, with the obligatory newbie disclaimer out of the way, in what ways do many of you organize your playlist?

This is something I'm interested in, as my own playlist is pretty much some 1500 songs or so jumbled together... Some grouped in and listed alphabetical order, others by album, some in no particular order, all squeezed into the same playlist. Mostly what happens is I go through and download all of an album and add files as they are downloaded to the playlist in the order they were acquired. The end result is usually a big group of one artist followed by little scattered chunks of various artists/genres when I get recommendations to download or hear songs on the radio/tv.

Now that you know the method ( or lack thereof ) to my madness, I'd like to know how some of you do it? Is there any particular way you list the songs in whatever MP3 player you use? I know that many of my friends say that the significance of the music experience is intensified when the right songs are played in conjunction, and I have seen this first-hand somewhat.

Okay, enough blabbing, what sort of ways are songs listed in all you Music-House goers' playlists?

Well, i'm not sure if you mean on the actual playlist or how it's organized on my hard drive. For on my hard drive, i have a Music folder and then each band has it's own folder, with soundtracks and shit under "miscellaneous", and for my playlist itself, i just do the "arrange alphabetically" thing.

I hav a Music Folder with a Soundtracks, Rap, Trance, and Alternatie(just the name i use for anything that doesn't fall in the previous categories). Then underthose i have folders for each band or artist. On the ID3 Tags I arrange them by Subfolder-Artist-Songname

Well, first of all, I use Winamp with the MMD3 skin (always on top) so that I can always see what's going on. As far as ID3 tags, I only bother with artist, song title, album title and year recorded (if I know that much). Whenever I download or rip a CD, I save that particular CD as its own playlist. I also have a playlist containing a full list of my MP3s that I just keep on shuffle.
To summarize, I have a number of playlists loaded - a bunch of individual CDs and one big compilation of every MP3 on my computer. Whenever I want to listen to a bunch of songs one after another, I just queue them. Sorry if this sounded repetitive or badly written... I'm tired.

I used to do the random thing... But sometimes I'm just not in the mood to hear songs that simply don't mesh well together...

Like when you're sitting there and listening to some mellow shit and all calm and the random Techno track your queer ass friend suggested you download and you were too lazy to delete pops up... And you're like What the fuck how the hell did we get here?

That's why I was asking about how people place songs in there playlists.

EDIT: Hey, that reminds me of another question I have relating to organizing one's music. I've had my current computer for going on three years now, with scattered music files all over the place. It's a real clusterfuck to sort out, with artists being named different (ex: Nine Inch Nails, NIN, 9 Inch Nails, Trent Reznor, you get the idea) and songs/filenames being the same way. For this reason, alphabetizing my playlist doesn't get me the results I want... Any suggestions on how I might sort out things a bit more, other than sifting through all the files by hand?

If I have more then 1 or 2 songs from a band they get their own folder. I also have very specific genre folders for miscellaneous songs which I don't know who made(lot of techno) or when I just have one song from a band.

The folders are more specific then techno/rap/rock, they are more like "Gabber", Speedcore", "80-85 Rock", "Grunge Rock", "80-85 Brit pop", "Industrial", ect...

I guess i'm just a control freak but when you have over 9gb of just music you need to keep some semblance of order or it will overwhelm you.

As for my playlists I normally just open up random folders and drag like 100 songs into a list, then I scroll down really fast and delete the stuff im not in a mood for.

Just take 20 mins to rename all your files. It's really not that tedious and can get very fast using copy paste and stuff.
Also, every time you D/L a song, take the time to name it properly. It may seem annoying but in the end you'll be pleased to have all your songs classified and perfectly organized and, when your mp3 folder starts to exceed 5 go, trust me you'll need perfect organization otherwise you'll spend disturbing amounts of time browsing through dozens of songs without finding the ones you want.
I personally name my songs this way : [Band name] - [Album] - [Track] - [Song title] It makes playlist creating really easier and much faster.

I'm in the process of putting my CDs on my MP3 player, which uses Musicmatch Jukebox. Windows Media always uploaded the songs track number first, but Jukebox uploads with the title first, and the folder alphebetizes them. The result is, I end up with the album all out of order. It's a pain.
