I've sold out!

After years of not downloading any napster programs I have broken down and downloaded Kazaa. Mostly because now I can burn cds...I am a dirty pigdog intellectual property thief. Metallica will hunt me down and destroy me for cutting into their profits(uhm, yes...file sharing software is the reason their albums don't sell...)

My first download was Fleetwood Mac's Go Your Own Way. pwn!

I felt that this new stage in my internet troll existence should be shared.

I'm just about in that same position. I have been adament for years in my support of the bands that I like in making sure I buy their albums and not just try and download them. The only thing keeping me from Kazaa and going to the darkside is my dial up internet connection.

For me, its 75% that I feel it's wrong to steal music, and 25% that every time I use Kazaa I end up d/ling a really shitty sounding version of the song, or I can't find the song, or it downloads so slow that I just give up.

I did use Napster a bit when it was around, cause it seemed to work so damn well. Mostly used it to listen to CD's before I buy them.

Only use it to get songs I can't find in stores. If it's not in major music stores they obviously don't want to sell it to me badly enough so I just download it. That, and I live in an age of instant gratification, I don't want to wait 3 weeks to have a rare album tracked down and shipped to me, much easier just to download.

I download stuff I cannot find in the stores, and I download lots of stuff I hear about here or there, or read about here... I personally get sick of paying 15-20 bucks for a CD just to end up liking only 1 or 2 songs.... If a band is good, and I can listen to at least 3/4 of the album and like it, then I will buy the CD to support them.

Unless I'm mistaken the actual artists don't get much from an cd sales.. they get more share in the money from touring and performing.. The money I save from buying cd's I use to go to shows...

I download everything. If i am a big fan of the group, or i'm really impressed by what i download, i will occasionally buy the cd. It's true, bands get most of their money from touring anyways, it's the record labels that are suffering, and i quite frankly don't care.

Also, i'll paraphrase what Kid Rock said to the press about it: 'Before the internet was big, i'd make 8 million dollars, now i might make 2 million. Boo fucking hoo.'

I have a Theory that people only download music they wouldn't usually buy or to check out bands they've not really heard from.

All the talk of the Napster Clones destroying the music industry is really just a smoke screen for how totally shit mainstream pop music is.

Or am I totally wrong...

I totally agree.

I've heard songs and can now name some bands that I NEVER would have heard of if it wasn't for the internet.

Good or Bad, it's the truth.

I download everything, dont think I've bought a new CD for myself in nearly 3 years now. I only own about, 20 CDs total to my name, yet have over 180hours worth of music on my computer (all except 2 of which I dont own on CD).

Why? - price gouging.. I just cant justify forking out 20-30cdn on a CD when there are other things I need/want more.

Now and then, if there is something amazing that pops up and I like it alot, I'll debate buying it. I tried desperatly to find DJ Caffeine in stores/etc to buy .. but I didnt have any luck, only store I found selling him was a yahoo store that didnt ship to canada, so I ended up downloading caffinated 4-7 .. when I would of gladly paied for atleast 6 & 7.

Toss in the fact that alot of the stuff I'd be tempted to buy now is imported .. notch that 20-30, to 30-40+ for a CD set.. and fuck no, that's food for a week for me (I eat cheap... bowl of special K + 2 peanut butter and honey sandhwichs can do me just fine)

ages ago when I could pick up a CD for 15 bucks, I had no problem paying for it .. now, its like pfft..screw that. (even though back then the prolifation of MP3s was not as high as it is now, I had a few good connections to nice FTP sites/etc..) sure, it took longer, but the option to download was still there.

Probably the one and only intelligent comment Kid Rock made in his whole life

My cousin is a spokesman who works for a fairly big recording label. And I download songs off the Internet.

We have ... interesting ... conversations.
