Drummer

Well, we had the guitarist thread and the bassist thread. So why not a drummer thread?

No contest for me on this one...

Neil Peart. End of list.

Well Neil Pert and Carter Beauford were already mentioned so I'll say Danny Carey. I like some of Abe Cunningham's stuff too.

Best drummer is hard, since it's fairly difficult for a drummer to stand out. Either you're good, okay, or bad, it's hard to differentiate in those categories.

My favorites though, are probably Phil Elvrum of The Microphones (for doing things with drums that weren't meant to be done), Janet Weiss from Sleater-Kinney (for playing with reckless abandon) and Fab Morretti from The Strokes (for nearly four minutes of what everyone assumes is a drum machine on Hard To Explain).

John Bonham. I mean seriously, listen to Bonzo's Montreaux, or even In My Time Of Dying, good fucking god he had some wicked beats.

Well this will be my first Non-Pearl Jam pick, even though Matt Cameron is a damn good drummer. I don't like Dave Matthews Band, but the drummer, Carter Beauford, has exceptional talent. He is damned good.

Damn, I can't believe I forgot Portnoy. I had the privilege of seeing him give a demonstration at a local drum store where he just played over a Dream Theater CD. That was a month or two ago.

Good holy god is he good. His kicks aren't the fastest I have ever seen but its damn close.

Brann Dailor of Mastodon, Tomas Haake of Meshuggah, Dave McLain, Dave Lombardo (Slayer and Fantomas especially), and Gene Hoglan. I love their stuff because they all really know how to use the entire kit to the fullest effect, and are incredible live. Too many drummers sound good on albums. but hit too weak and have to rely on triggers live.

Lots of the other drummers mentioned in this thread I like also, they just know how to play drums like a mofo on albums and live.
