| Best Bass guitar player ever The best guitarist thread got me thinking. Who is the best bassist of all time? My vote would have to be for Aston "Familyman" Barrett (bassist/musical director for Bob Marley and the Wailers). Not simply based on his raw talent, but for his incredible writing/organization skills as well. Combine that with the fact that he is still touring with The Wailers (best performance I've ever seen, btw) and, IMHO, you have a winner. Honorable mention goes to Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers (He's got "flava") |

| While I do not know alot of bass players, I do like the bassist of Queen's style as well as Paul D'Amour's style (TooL bassist on Undertow and everything before... also has his own band Peach which kick ass). I don't know... |

| I've been playing bass for eight years now, and my biggest influence has always been Peter Hook of Joy Division/New Order. The guy's name describes him well. He just makes the best bass hooks and generally outshines the other instruments on his recordings, but not in an overt or overly showy way. His bass lines are generally simple and easy to play even for a novice (Love Will Tear Us Apart was one of the first, if not the first, song I ever learned how to play), but not many people can make them sound half as cool as he does. I could give a shit about the technical masters. I'll take a guy like Mr. Hook any day. |

| Personally I've always thought John Entwistle of the Who was really good

| Jaco Pastorius is probably the best in the world. Flea and Les Claypool are great fast funk bassists. John Entwistle is probably the best bassist of his time, just listen to him and keith on "The Ox". In terms of writing good, simple hooks, I'd have to go with Kim Deal from the Pixies (Gigantic is my favorite simple bass line). Some honorable mentions would be Paul McCartney, for writing so many great bass lines, Noel Redding for holding Jimi's sound together when he was with them, MCA from the beastie boys, because even though it's not even on half the songs they play, their are some great live basslines on the albums (Listen to Gratitude) |

+19 Internets | Les Claypool isn't a funk bassist at all, Primus isn't funk. I dunno, I have always liked the creativity Les Claypool brings to the table. Geddy Lee has some good licks too. Whoever was playing bass for Infectious Grooves was good too, not great though. |

| It's really hard to choose a good bass player and not be forced to look at the flash dexterous ones. I could name a few names, but you'd go wtf? Is a good bass player one who can flash his finger's around a fretboard, one who plays appropriately and doesn't showboat, or one who uses the most creativity? Flashiness gets you noticed, but I think, like the guitar player thread, get you too much attention. Just throwing your wang around without concern for the music (unless its speed metal, that's all bravado) -tari |

| It's Peter Hook. Everything Joy Division or New Order ever wrote was driven by it's bassline, and his side project Monaco are the most underappreciated band around. Nothing's ever going to match the bassline from Disorder. |

| Victor Wooten. Go download Victor Wooten - Classical thump, and tell me there is a more technically gifted electric bassist on the planet. He is also an incredible double bassist, playing with the Flecktones among other things. An all around amazing bass player. |

| Stu Hamm, Geddy Lee, Steve Harris and Les Claypool are all great rock bass players. Probably dozens of other great ones that play music that I don't listen to much or at all.
