Probably my favorite classic rock song (excluding Pink Floyd)

"Good bye to all my friends at home,
good bye to people i trusted,
i've got to go out and make my way,
i might get rich you know i might get busted,
but my heart keeps pulling me backwards,
as i get on the 707,
friday night i've got tears in my eyes,
got to go through hell before you,
get to heaven"

Haha, the lyrics on Jet Airliner are so wrong.

P.S. To add to the thread topic. I listen to a ridiculous number of genres, I enjoy classic rock as well as indie/new age. Being a musician, you learn to appreciate music for what it is. Anybody who says 'soandso sucks' is just being a naive, ignorant cockfuck.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Leavin' home, out on the road
I've been down before
Ridin' along in this big ol' jet plane
I've been thinkin' about my home
But my love light seems so far away
And I feel like it's all been done
Somebody's tryin' to make me stay
You know I've got to be movin' on

Oh, Oh big ol' jet airliner
Don't carry me too far away
Oh, Oh big ol' jet airliner
Cause it's here that I've got to stay

Goodbye to all my friends at home
Goodbye to people I've trusted
I've got to go out and make my way
I might get rich you know I might get busted
But my heart keeps calling me backwards
As I get on the 707
Ridin' high I got tears in my eyes
You know you got to go through hell
Before you get to heaven

Big ol' jet airliner
Don't carry me too far away
Oh, Oh big ol' jet airliner
Cause it's here that I've got to stay

Touchin' down in New England town
Feel the heat comin' down
I've got to keep on keepin' on
You know the big wheel keeps on spinnin' around
And I'm goin' with some hesitation
You know that I can surely see
That I don't want to get caught up in any of that
Funky shit goin' down in the city

Interesting thread. So, how does everyone feel about how bands perform live?

I feel back in the day, before my day, bands became popular because of their live performances. I feel that’s still important, but the general mass of posers don’t really care. Example: Dragonforce. I don’t really like them, but my buddy had a ticket and wanted someone to go with. He had me listen to the album in the car and it wasn’t really my thing but there were some nutty sounding guitar solos. Overall, the live performance was extremely sloppy. At one point I was actually laughing in the audience. I almost felt like it was a huge joke and that everyone was going to turn around and yell HAHA PUNKED! But no, this was their actual attempt at music and the mindless sheep continued their faggoty attempt at a mosh pit. The entire time I was trying to decipher how anything I heard on the album resembled what they were playing on stage.

Welcome to the era where bands are depending on technology to put songs together for them. It’s truly disgusting to me when a group will release something on an album yet can’t play it live.

Anyway, for the intent of the thread and good music:

Bands being bad live is not a new thing. The worst band I ever saw live by far was Aerosmith back about '79. They were way too drunk to be on stage and were barley coherent.

Those lyrics for jet airliner are funny as hell, I used to love Steve Miller. The Joker (I know not the same album) was one of my favorite albums as a kid.

In short, I think anyone that didn't actually grow up during that era and genuinely likes classic rock, actually has no taste in music.
Wow man that is one narrow minded view, good music is timeless just like a good movie or a great book. That would be like saying anyone who didn't grow up in the 80's who likes scarface has no taste in movies, or anyone who did not grow up in the 40's but liked Lord of the Rings doesn't have taste in books.

Music is a completely subjective art form, and if you seriously think James is "afraid of having his taste critiqued", you're probably also afraid that your buddies will pull up next to you at a stop light and hear that Color Me Badd CD that you sneak in from time to time. I don't like any of the bands you listed earlier. I'd rather gouge my eyes out than listen to the Cure, but the thing is that I don't give a shit if someone else likes them or not. Subjective. If you like it, good for you, if you hate on someone else's tastes and dismiss them as "having shit taste in music" because they like something that you don't, you're the dickbag, not them.

No, it's not.

There are certain types of music which are unequivocally shit regardless of how you look at it.

Seriously guys, just take it from Araysar's list. Fuck classic rock, it's all about Kylie Minogue. (I actually don't mind the song in a "oh hey that's catchy" kind of way but it's the easiest target on the list)

Funny, that's how I'd describe 90% of the bands you listed. However if you're into them, rock on.

It sort of ties in with a major, but not exclusive, difference that you can see between older rock and newer rock. Back in the 70's, which is what most people probably reference with "classic rock", if you wanted to be a rock band, you pretty much needed to have a badass lead guitar player. Someone who could shred solos in whatever style of rock you decided to play. Over time, rock bands have gotten away from that. There are still bands out there who are guitar driven, but many more are not. Even lots of the bad bands in the "classic rock" era at least knew that they had to have a dude with some chops if they wanted to come correct.

There has been lots of great rock since the 70's and many great rock musicians and songwriters. But it seems like the general popular rock listening public has lost their taste for guitar driven bands in favor of stylistic and lyrical/rhythm driven bands. As terrible as 80's hair metal was, it was still guitar driven at least, even if most of the solos were just flashy arpeggios. As great as R.E.M. was, I don't think anyone was drawn to them to hear Peter Buck rip it up on a six string.

I can listen to classic rock radio and hear tons of stuff that really doesn't speak to me or falls outside my preferred genres and culture, but I still recognize a good guitar solo.

Not making judgment calls on people's tastes here. But much of my own interest in rock music is highly tied to guitar solos. I like punk and alternative stuff quite a bit, as well as many non-rock genres. Still, I feel like rock has lost something over the years as it has moved away from the original musicianship to a large degree.

That's a good point. Honestly the number 1 reason I prefer older rock to newer rock is that older rock is centered around the guitar like you said. It's not just the guitar solos

It's that the guitar throughout the entire song has a unique flavor and melody that is lacking in much modern rock.

Nope. Nothing God Awesome. Just the same crap everyone listens to. /shrug Guess I can't talk about music because I don't fill my time trying to like shit only a handful of other people have managed to like. Unknown shit is unknown mostly because it's usually shit.

BTW...all of my opinions are my opinions. Your opinions are yours. It's awesome how opinions work out like that.
BTW that wasn't directed at you. It was directed at Araysar. I was just pointing out how Araysar thinks that people who listen to classic rock can only listen to classic rock via what you said. Oh well it didn't work as intended.

Modern rock follows a very strict and simple pattern: verse, chorus, verse, chorus, etc. To me, a lot of modern music is boring and uninspiring. For 3 minutes you're listening to 2 or 3 different riffs and the song is done.

An example (and I'll probably get negged for it) is the new single by Muse. Apparently people jizz at that song but to me, it's no different from Linkin Park or Nickelback. If you pay attention to it, it's the same shit for 5 minutes or however long that song is. The coolness just wears off after the first minute or two when you realize they're going to repeat the same shit.
