Anyhoo, I listened to this when I went jogging today and it's not bad. It should be noted that I'm a giant DCfC fan (yes, Dntel and Ben should get royalties from this) but it's a pretty respectable album. | |

| You people act like 99% of beats, melodies, and lyrics haven't been written many times before. I for one am loving this album. It's got a whistfulness that Postal Service doesn't, and my ears just go /GLEE when I hear these songs.

| Discovered them(him?) thru thesixtyone.com, specifically that song. Yea, it's VERY postal service, but considering there isn't much Postal Service and I love them, I like it, original or not. |

| The remix version of Hello Seattle is better imo. Overall I am enjoying the album. If there was more Postal Service I don't know if I would care but since we only have one album by them I'm eating this up. My favorites are The Saltwater Room, Cave In, Fireflies, and Hello Seattle remix. I wish he would have done more tracks with the female vocals in Saltwater Room. |

I hate the "there's not enough postal service stuff out so this guy gets my $ instead!" type of reasoning too. Especially because the amount of shit this board gives hip hop. I don't think the music is bad, how could you really if you're a fan of TPS? But I refuse (silly, pointless, whatever) to give this guy any money or support for this. I listed to the songs Foggy listened, what a surprise he has a female vocalist appear on the album as well ![]() Stealing ideas and even beats is one thing, but stealing melodies and speech patterns is different to me. | I'm gonna have to respectfully disagree Ham. You think it's too derivative and don't like it, ok that's fine. But, saying he's too similar and that's bad is like saying all electro artists are just ripoffs of Kraftwerk. TPS was a somewhat original style, and if someone copies them but manages to make good, more power to them. Not every band can be completely new and inventive AND good at the same time. I'm not saying he's the best thing ever, but I don't understand the full on hate or why you disagree with the logic of 'It's the next best thing to new TPS'. Same reasoning behind Interpol being successful, except their source material was older. |

+39 Internets | Because those songs sound like impersonations, not like influences to me, and I think there is a big difference. I don't know, there's a lot of bands that sound similar to each other or were clearly influenced (like Interpol/JD or TMV/Rush) by older music, but this seems like something SNL would've done. Because like I said its when you copy the melody is when it starts to become plagiarism to me, add in using the same singing style as Gibbard and it really got to me I guess. To each their own though, I'll stop shitting on them here. |

| If you liken music to movies I'd argue alot of hip hop is like Tarantino. It'll lift an idea but change the context making it cooler. Samples, mixtapes, whatever. A song with an elton john sample doesnt sound like a shitty version of the elton john song. It sounds like a new song with bits of the elton john song in it. On the other end of the spectrum you have American remakes of japanese horror films. Its the same movie but with different actors. I've always been of the mind that one should just watch the damn original. Owl City seems like that to me. The songs dont seem like they were influenced by the postal service so much as they seem like remakes of postal service songs. I'll just stick to the original. If you do like the postal service check out some of Dntel's other albums.

+39 Internets | My problem with Owl City isn't that it's derivative. My problem is it's bad. Then I get annoyed because apparently some people are so desperate for anything that sounds derivative of PS that they don't care or can't recognize how awful it is. |

| I just heard them the other day and gave their album a preview after hearing the firefly song. I like the sound of his songs (yeah it does remind me of postal service) and his voice, but the lyrics have to be some of the worst Ive heard in a long time. I cant stand listening to the music due to the lyrics sounding like an 8th grader wrote them. |

| Registered User | Unusual lyrics aside, I really enjoy OC and this new album. I feel like "the bird and the worm," "dental care," "fireflies," and "vanilla twilight" are all pretty solid. The music is also a pretty relaxed way to wake up in the morning, if you have something that can play your ipod as a phone. |

+5 Internets | I don't think the lyrics are that bad. I mean, yeah, there's 8th grade subject matter ("Meteor Shower" being the worst offender). But he does have a few clever play on words here and there... Quote:

+7 Internets | I found out about this guy earlier this year and I really have been enjoying the stuff. He also has a side project called Swimming With Dolphins that has some really good songs too. The female vocals in both band's songs (Silhouettes, Saltwater Room, etc.) are by this girl Breanne Duren who also has a solo album. Worth checking out if you like her voice, it's a lot more mellow than Owl City or Swimming With Dolphins though. |
