Need some suggestions for some GOOD rap...

Anyone care to suggest some quality rap? Until recently, I've hated rap; I always preferred more complex forms of music (Tool, for instance, is my favorite band). Anyway, a few days ago I realized I wanted to broaden my horizons musically, I never really subscribed to the notion that everything that wasn't hardcore metal or rock was trash. That brings me to the point. I need some quality rap to use as a sort of starting point for my musical exploration. Some of the stuff I've heard and liked is Snoop Dogg, especially the older stuff from the early 90s. I'm open to any suggestions, as long as it isn't bling bling Jay-Z / Ja rule bullshit.

not sure if you like the 'gangster rap', but i made my own 2pac 'best of' cd, consisting of these tracks: (60% are from 'All Eyez On Me)

2pac - Best Of - 01 - Ambitionz Az A Ridah
2pac - Best Of - 02 - All Bout U
2pac - Best Of - 03 - Lost Souls
2pac - Best Of - 04 - Wonder Why They Call U Bytch
2pac - Best Of - 05 - Skandalouz
2pac - Best Of - 06 - 2 Of Amerikaz Most Wanted
2pac - Best Of - 07 - Me Against The World
2pac - Best Of - 08 - When We Ride
2pac - Best Of - 09 - Do For Love
2pac - Best Of - 10 - Only God Can Judge Me
2pac - Best Of - 11 - Got My Mind Made Up
2pac - Best Of - 12 - Shorty Wanna Be A Thug
2pac - Best Of - 13 - Changes
2pac - Best Of - 14 - California Love
2pac - Best Of - 15 - Wanted Dead Or Alive
2pac - Best Of - 16 - No More Pain

almost all tracks feature some rapper, like Nas, Snoop Dog, Dr. Dre, etc., very cool music. the last two tracks are very chill-ish. most of the other songs on 'all eyes on me' are ass (imo), but these rock.

oh, and don't flame the way he writes, he used it before all the kids on AOL

Muahahah haha

Seriously though, I really like the conversation club / garage sound of 'The Streets'

A few years back I really liked Beastie Boys, like Paul's Boutique, and Check your Head

I agree with somecleric, The Roots and Hieroglyphics/Souls of Mischief (including Del) are damn good, along with most of the 2pac listed above.

I like KRS-One, Spice One, Eazy E, Wu, and Too Short, just to name a few.

I'm not a big rap fan myself, but I do enjoy listening to Ludacris and Outkast, they acutally rap because they seem to enjoy it instead of hoping on the blingbling-my-whole-mouth-is-filled-with-platinum
bandwagon.

Edit: I would like to add that, I hope 'Lil Bow Wow' caught an STD from the bodyguard that raped him.

Here is some suggestions for you. For hard core rap that will make you sick and vomit then Brotha Lynch Hung is goos. For fun rap the the likes of Nelly is the way to go. For rap that IF YOU LISTEN TO WHAT HE HAS TO SAY is verythought provoking then DMX is the way to go. For rap in general then 2Pac is great and TechN9ne is a good one too. I personally put them under party rap. Any questions? Good. Later

Y'all are forgetting Jurassic 5, Jedi Mind Tricks, and Blackalicious

J5's tracks to look out for:

Improvise
Quality Control
What's Golden?
One of Them
Hey
Thin Line

Jedi Mind Tricks:

The Apostle's Creed

Blackalicious:

Deception
Alphabet Aerobics

For more mainstream stuff, don't overlook Nas, either!

Smile Here are a few old and somewhat new . .

Well if you don't like all the bells and whistles filth that is called "rap" now a days you can try anything before 1990 by RunDMC . Most people either hate or love them, depends on taste I guess, "rockbox" is a pretty sweet tune from 85, though you'll find the lyrics are not as hard as now a days, but nice flows never the less. Also try 5th Ward Boyz, album is called The Usual Suspects. Brothalynch is not too bad either along with Daz Dilinger. But for some wicked flowing action check out Lyricist's Lounge, thats a personal favorite , GL.

Adam Warlock, a being who wished nothing more than to spend the rest of his days within the peaceful environment of the Soul Gem. While I, whose entire life was dedicated to the pursuit of power, now find myself scraping out a living from the soil. Irony worthy of the drama. Yet strangely enough, I envy not Adam Warlock. Somehow I feel, that in the long run, Thanos of Titan came out ahead in this particular deal.”
