+25 Internets | Yeah, been a fan of his since I heard the first few notes of Bad As It Seems. Not sure I'm familiar with Skyscraper National Park, is that his latest release? I believe I only have Everything I Long For and Elk Lake Serenade (or whatever the name is). |

| It's the one before Elk Lake Serenade. IMO it's his best. The story behind it is pretty interesting too; After Everything I long for Hayden started to draw alot of national attention. In fact he was voted as one of the top ten acts to look out for by Spin magazine. For a while there it looked like he was going to become really successful in the states and abroad. This was around the same time he did the title track for that Steve Buscemi movie "Trees Lounge" (fantastic song btw, I love melodies that are played on bass, very Inbreds sounding). Anyways after that he released his second LP, which was recieved with lukewarm reviews (I have the CD in my car, I forget the name of it, The Closer I get?) he sorta disappeared. Apparently he almost completely gave up making music. For the next few years he started putting together songs in his home with some friends and eventually he had enough to put out an LP. He hand made the cases, out of wood and stamped a deer on them. He only gave them out to friends and family until finally they convinced him to sell some. 100 copies were made and dropped off at one of the local records stores here in Toronto. They sold within 20 minutes or something crazy like that. The best part is the album is really fucking good. You can tell he grew up alot during the time he wrote this album. His sound really came together. Check out: - Lullabye - Dynamite Walls - Long way down - Carried Away

+3 Internets | I'm responding to a four year old post, but oh well... I love almost everything by The Tragically Hip, but I saw them live at GM Place just over a year ago, and hated the show. The lead singer was drunk or high or something, he kept fucking up the lyrics and completely ruined the show. The rest of the band was not able to save things either. Eomer, you know how you said that the lead singer could not be there and everyone would be able to sing the songs themselves? Well, we were trying, but he kept fucking adding in lyrics or changing the pace or just rambling, it was extremely frusterating. Could barely sing along at all.

+25 Internets | That's what makes their shows so awesome, IMO. He's not drunk or high, he's just Gordon Downie. At Sasquatch he spent a good portion of the end of the first song yelling at his microphone stand, which had broken earlier in the song. He was telling it he was A Man, and it was merely an inanimate object and nothing without him. And then he started squawking and screaming about goddamn seagulls. I don't find he messes with the main verses or chorus, he just tends to add lyrics in at the end of songs or in the middle where there's gaps. As far as I'm concerned, he's one of the best band frontmen around. If you have not heard the "Killer Whale Tank" version of New Orleans Is Sinking, you really need to go out and find it. It's fucking hilarious, especially when you stop to consider that he was just making that shit up as he went along. |
