| I was following your post up until you seemed to imply that referencing Tolkien is somehow considered geeky. I beg to differ. No less than Led Zeppelin have referenced Tolkien in a great many of their songs, including some of their best work. And don't tell me you're going to call Zeppelin a bunch of geeks. :P I guess it all depends on how a reference is used. If you're going to toss around words like "elves" and "wizards" as if you're a D&D nerd, then yes, those things are dorky. But if you're going to be subtle and clever about it, then by all means, go right ahead. As for Rush: I've never been a Rush fan, and I'm somewhat proud of that fact. ^_^ I don't "hate" them, per se, but I don't really see them as anything more than the occasional punchline to a music-related one liner. +29 Internets | Screw you Merauk, Celine Dion is also from Canada and she ROCKS! Oh no wait. Honestly though, you would be surprised at the amount of wicked music that there is in Canada. Maybe later on I will post a thread about it, I have been meaning to for awhile. |

+29 Internets | The reason why there is this perception that Canadian music sucks, is that because the few acts that get really popular suck ass. However, whose fault is that? You Americans are the one buying the records .Honestly there are dozens of extremely good canuck bands that deserve large recognition that don't get it, because for some reason they just cannot seem to attract any attention south of the border, for whatever reason. |

| It seems every thread has a mention of The Ramones, ontopic or not, thanks to a number of hardcore Ramones fans here. I generally respect other people's opinions, but rather than post to 15 threads about why The Ramones aren't very good, I'm doing it all here. Not because you're not allowed to like The Ramones, but because I don't want anyone buying any Ramones albums because they get mentioned often here as a good band. Don't be fooled, The Ramones suck. The Ramones suck a lot. They're fairly skilled musicians, but they were like the Tool of their day. They were painfully pretentious, and people only really liked them because they enjoyed being able to look down on people who 'didn't get' that The Ramones were like, amazing, man. Prog is the most horrible thing ever to happen to music, it was just an excuse to make really long, really monotonous songs with lame hooks recycled from Pink Floyd and Queen. Gotta love people who tote off opinion as fact in their own diluted little worlds. Here's a news flash einstein, there's 5 billion people in this world, and chances are they like different things then you, GO FIGURE!!!111 |

| you know... watching you people argue about music is about as mindlessly entertaining as reading through this thread: http://pub92.ezboard.com/f2manchewsm...D=1663 .topic |

| Speaking of Canadian music...anyone here like Triumph? On the Rush subject though, I guess it's fair to say people either love Rush or they hate Rush. I personally love their music. Like a previous poster said, just because their songs don't fit the 3:30 cookie cutter mold for song length means they suck. If I wanted to only listen to "cookie cutter" songs, I would listen to all the new "Pop" stuff out now. My favorite Rush songs are Xanadu, Trees and Limelight with a slew of others I like also. I think Alex Lifeson is underrated as a guitar player imo. Granted he's not anyone who "changed" guitar playing or burns up the frets with his speed. What he does do though is compliment very well Geddy and Neil. I still think Neil is one of the best ever at playing the skins, and Geddy isn't too shabby at the Bass/Keyboard. Also if anyone didn't know, all 3 of them have degrees in music. I think that's also why they all compliment each other so well. |
