Requiem for...a hobbit?

So I've seen Requiem for a Dream, right? And I liked it a lot. You know what I really liked about Requiem for a Dream? The music. The music really lifted the movie up, without the brilliant music, Requiem would've been an 'ok flick.' Not only do I really really like the music in Requiem, but I also feel that the music itself is very special and unique to Requiem. Because when I hear it, I think of Sara Goldfarb and all her crazy friends. Anyway...

I'm sitting at my computer, and I come across this file, I've had this file for a long time, but I decide to take another look at it. It's the Lord of the Rings Two Towers preview. And it kicks ass, so I thought I'd look at it again. Well anyway, the elapsed time is approaching two minutes when I start to hear something familiar, and I say to myself (I actually say this outloud) "That sounds like Kronos Quartet." Well that's just what popped out of my mouth, I'm no expert, I certainly don't know what Kronos Quartet sounds like, but at two minutes I said "That IS Kronos Quartet!" Well incase you didn't know, Kronos Quartet did the music for Requiem for a Dream. Not all of it, but I'm pretty sure they did do that distinctive strings solo, you know which one I'm talking about if you saw Requiem.

And whether you saw Requiem or you didn't, you can see it all here. In that FTP folder I put in the 5 songs (listed below) ripped from the Requiem soundtrack, and also I placed the LotR preview, so you can download it, seek to 2 minutes, and be as appauled as I am.

Anyway, in the songs, we can see the strings solo at...
Cleaning Appartment- 0:45 into the song
Hope Overture- 1:49 into the song
Lux Aeterna- 1:21, 2:18, 3:30 -Three instances!
Marion Barfs- 0:57 into the song
Summer Overture- 1:49 into the song

And then in the LotR-TT preview, you can really disctincly hear that same piece of music, 2 minutes into the video.

Remember, it's all in this folder. Take the 10 minutes and be as shocked and horrified as I am.

edit: The FTP folder now contains all songs from the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack

edit again: that is to say, they would but the fserve is down for now, because my computer is off while I move

It's a totaly usual practice to use music from other movies in trailers.

Why? Because when the trailer is released the music for the movie is not always completed or nothing on the score works well for a trailer...

theres very few trailers that use their own music. in fact movie studios keep a huge selection in their music library that theyve paid x amount of money to be allowed to use liberaly without additional licenses for each time they throw it on another commericial or trailer.

youll find they have a generic sound library as well; its hard to tell sometimes but youll find the vast portion of sound effects are not unique except in very high budget movies (even than they will sample some)

At least 3 or 4 movies a year uses music from Last of the Mohicans for their trailers it seems like.

I too noticed the same thing, and like the person that asked the same question of Roger Ebert noticed one other difference. Most music used in trailers is pulled directly from another movie soundtrack. But this particular piece in the Two Towers preview sounded just a tad different. It was because it was actually redone. Here is the full info on that piece of music that was used in the trailer.

Quote:
A. You have good ears. Yes, the "Requiem" score was used, and yes, it was re-orchestrated. I contacted the AM's expert source David Bondelevich, award-winning music editor and lecturer at the University of Southern California. He at first assumed that "but re-scoring it would be prohibitively expensive," but his contact at the Ant Farm, which created the trailer, said otherwise.

Nathan D. Duvall, music producer at the Ant Farm, explained, "In many cases a trailer is created in two days and there isn't enough time to create original music. With 'Two Towers,' the editor who cut the trailer fell in love with the 'Requiem' score but found that it didn't quite adhere to the typical trailer music formula. To solve this we created a larger orchestration that arched to a big resolution. 'Requiem' is a more intimate feature yet it has a haunting melody that easily translates to a more broad feature in 'Two Towers.' The 'Rings' score is well placed in the first minute of the 'Two Towers' trailer but the editor found that she needed something different since 'Towers' is a different act in the trilogy. Once you have introduced the known characters and reminded the audience of their separate journeys we needed to depart from the old score. Howard Shore had not yet completed his score for 'Two Towers' by the time we finished our trailer so we couldn't use any of the new music. As far as creative decisions go, our partner here at the Ant Farm who holds the Rings account, Barbara Glazer, supported our attempt with the revised 'Requiem' theme. And all creative decisions are finally approved by [LOTR director] Peter Jackson."
I also loved the music in Requiem for a Dream, great movie, great music.

The Song is called "Requiem for the Rings" or something like that. The entire thing was posted on a website for some time, it was where I downloaded it. Its about a 4 minute piece. I absouletely love it and have burned it to a cd along with some other older classical stuff.

I dont believe you can download it at the site it was up at anymore though, or at www.theonering.net

Grah, That was on the web as an Mp3? Bleh, I knew I should have searched for it.

Any plans to release it on a CD, maybe on the two towers soundtrack?
